UMD Banneker Key & Other Aid Class of 2022 discussion

Soo is it safe to assume that they a) have not invited out of state candidates yet or b) there will be no out of state banneker-key scholars this year?

@1qwertyuiop19
I am wondering the same thing…my coalition checklist does not mention anything B-K related. I am out of state.

We are out of state and my daughter received the email for the interview around 5 PM. We did not receive the envelope yet. She was ale to go see her interview date on the Coalition web site. We are very grateful…

Still hoping out of state candidates hear something in the next few days

Per the UMd website, there are 400 B/K semi-finalists and 250 finalists. For the 150 semi-finalists that do not make it to finalist status are they still considered for Dean’s or President’s Scholarship? It seems a little odd that other applicants could get Dean or President Scholarships when a B/K semi-finalist ends up with nothing.

@adlgel BK semi-finalists get 8k if they’re in state and 12k if they’re out of state - which is the maximum President’s Scholarship. They also receive a book allowance (around 1kish).

Ah ok. In reading the website I initially thought that the 250 finalists would receive one of the two levels of funded scholarships. But upon reading again it does sound like the 250 finalists receive the fully funded scholarship and the other semi-finalists receive the partial scholarship.

Is the Partial scholarship awarded for eight semesters as well?

What dates were assigned to Banneker/Key semifinalists? Mine’s a Wednesday and I’d have to fly, so I’m looking at potential dates to reschedule.

@CContemplative1 March 5th is one of the interview dates.

My son got a 36 on the act… no email yet. Not sure if theyre all sent already?

@hs992012 - From what I’ve read on this blog, the selection process is not formulaic and some students who are extremely qualified are not chosen to get a B/K interview. Statistically, 400 is a small number out of a large qualified pool. Likewise, there were definitely kids chosen with test scores lower than your son, which may not make sense to parents like us. I have a feeling all the letters are already out, and all the coalition checklists have already been updated. Take heart, the Presidential scholarships will be announced in mid-March!

Has anyone been notified about a President’s or Dean’s award?

Ditto above re: Kathy V. Please post when notified of President’s scholarships. OOS and looking for some merit. DS accepted to Honors College and it’s his first choice but need some merit $ off the OOS sticker price for him to go to UMD.

@DollyPuppy @hs992012 My son emailed a person in the Honors administration. The response he received yesterday was that all B/K finalists have been notified. Also, other scholarship decisions would be released by the beginning of March. I assume that means other merit awards (the $8K and $12K awards for IS & OOS). No B/K for us.

We, like many, are dependent on a great deal of merit because of the tremendous OOS difference. We are amazed (but not surprised) about all of the great students we see on this site. We are additionally surprised that most of these students are not receiving nearly full tuition. A 36 ACT is the approximately top 1/10 of 1% (0.1) in the entire country. We understand the holistic approach. He also chose to apply to very competitive universities. Still somewhat discouraging to us as parents. It is difficult to imagine how the students must feel.

Congratulations to all of the students for their hard work.

Wow @grndad I can understand your frustration. Your son sounds amazing! I would think colleges would be knocking on your door offering free rides!

@Astro77 Thank you for the kind words. I wouldn’t say that we are frustrated but a certainly a little discouraged.

I did forget to mention that he only applied to a few very competitive universities. We allowed him this choice because of his hard work and dedication. We must accept the consequences of that choice. When the process began, we started to get a better understanding of how truly competitive this can be. It remains difficult to believe.

@grndad , He will certainly receive the presidential scholarship, which is higher for OOS I believe - I think $12k (?) This B/K outcome is further proof how MANY qualified applicants UMD had this year, and that kids and families are choosing public schools for excellent educations! I hear ya tho, OOS prices are tougher to take. In the mean time, get him clients to tutor - AP, ACT, and academic clients! He could clean up!

Thanks @DollyPuppy . We are hopeful for the Presidential scholarship but will hope for more from other sources. It will be painful to end up with what would amount to in-state full price considering his stats. He has some merit from our in-state school. Even that is surprisingly small.

He did have one tutoring job that was very successful. I will definitely pass on your suggestion.

Does anyone know when you get your interview time for B/K? Do they just tell you when you register and check in that day (I’m going on March 5)? I’m so nervous…
