UMD Chances OOS vs IS

Hello, I was wondering how the chances of getting in UMD differ between out of state and in state applicants. Is there generally no difference? Does one have more of an advantage than the other?

Another question - Does and how much does EA impact chances of getting in?

@cloudscarryrain - UMD is required by policy to maintain a student population that is approximately 70% in-state.

UMD also gets a majority of each Freshman class from the EA applicants (UMD calls it the Priority Deadline). They get around 25,000 EA applicants and maybe 8,000 RD applicants.

@SoofDad - assuming more people IS apply than OS, theres generally no advantage than the other?

@cloudscarryrain - Here is the UMD Board of Regents policy regarding OOS students.

ADMISSION OF OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS TO UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Each institution may establish for out-of-state students standards that are higher than the undergraduate admission standards for in-state students. If a choice must be made between applicants of roughly comparable ability and promise, preference will be given to the Maryland resident.

Excluding UMUC students and all students enrolled exclusively in distance education programs, the number of out-of-state undergraduate students in any institution shall not exceed 30 percent of its total undergraduate student body.

I do not know if UMD applies higher standards to OOS students. The policy says that they “may” do that.

I also do not know how many OOS applicants UMD gets.

I am pasting the above here for quick read:
“Just back from my D’s Orientation and thought I would share the the Honors college stats from the slide that was presented. Impressive!! We are OOS and my D is 1 of 3 students from her HS attending the HC. Was shocked to see how few OOS in the HC!
HONORS FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: 950 Students; 295 High Schools; 22 States; 82.2% From Maryland; 41 Perfect SAT or ACT Score; Middle 50%: SAT: 1460-1540; ACT: 33-35; Average GPA: 4.6”
This 18% OOS in Honors College, is not inconsistent with UMD’s policy of aiming for around 70% overall from in state, as mentioned above by SoofDad.
Also, in the 2018-2019 cycle, UMD received more than 40,000 applications; I don’t know the breakdown for IS and OOS, though.

OOS is more competitive for sure.

Related note for UMD, all financial aid material must be in by November 1 for all applicants (IS; OOS; EA; RD).

momofsenior1 - I would think in-state is pretty competitive too since Maryland has some of the best schools in the country. Of course, some of the top students apply to UMD as a safety school and end up going elsewhere.
