UMD admission advice

Parent of OOS class of 2024. Unweighted GPA 3.75 SAT 1210 Math 620 Reading 590 Essay 6/10. Extracurriculars: NHS and NHS board member, Business/Technology Honor Society, Captain Varsity Soccer Team, 2 jobs. Does he have a shot of admission ? Any advice is so greatly appreciated

@klw3513 - I really can’t answer your question about chances, because I just do not know. UMD uses a holistic review for application decisions. My best advice is to apply by the Priority Deadline (Nov 1). UMD fills most of their freshman class from Priority Deadline applicants. There is also the chance of getting a Spring admission, but those students are also offered Freshman Connection, which allows them to start in the Fall

My D is an alum.
There is a small chance since his stats are on the lower end, some are admitted for spring and can enroll in fall in Freshman Connection.

But rigor of his current curriculum and the holistic factors are very important. Also, consider applying to a less popular major.
It will be hard because UMD has had increases in applications and stats of accepted students are higher than ever.
Ask your guidance counselor if any students with similar record have been admitted.
Local kids with similar stats get rejected and there are hard feelings.
My guess for next year -fewer kids will be admitted than last year because more than expected decided to enroll, leading to some overcrowding in dorms.

We are in Maryland. This year D had several friends that were denied admission with similar SAT scores. Freshman Connection was offered to a friend with a 1310, 3.65 UW and a ton of EC.

He may want to retake the SAT in October to increase his score.

I suggest crafting excellent essays and short answers in the coalition app to augment his SAT scores. UMCP takes in around 18-20% from OOS. As others have said, do apply early, by November 1.

As others have said, UMD CP saw an increase in yield recently so this allows them to be more selective. The high school my son went to had a very low number of students of their class of 2019 admitted to CP. It is impossible to determine chances but an SAT score of 1210 is in the low range and I would think that CP would be a reach. Good luck with this process! It is exciting…

Do have access to any admissions data from your son’s high school (from Naviance or similar)?

My son was admitted to UMD from OOS for Class of 2023 with a slightly lower unweighted GPA, but he submitted a 34 ACT and 1480 SAT. Those were pretty typical stats for admitted kids from his high school, where the average SAT is around 1300.

Good luck - they always take some students with SAT scores in your son’s range. It sounds like he is a well-rounded kid and hopefully the holistic review will help him.
