Umd civicus

Hey guys, I was recently accepted into the CIVICUS program at UMD and I’m looking for some people who has experience with it or others who will be enrolling in the program. It would be really helpful to get some more info on it!

Bump

My D was also accepted into this program and would also be interested to learn more about it. They have a website which has some videos and a lot of basic info, but interested to hear from actual participants. Originally was thinking UMD was too big a school for her, but this program seems to be a good way to make a big school seem smaller, and the dorm in a central location on campus is a nice perk.

My son was accepted into Civicus as well. It seems like a nice program. We Watched some videos on it but would love to hear from a student who was in it.

I was in CIVICUS my freshman and sophomore year, and I can honestly say that it was one of the best parts of my college experience. Not only do you have the opportunity to participate in community service, but you get to meet some really great people within the program. It doesn’t hurt that Somerset Hall, the dorm CIVICUS associates live in, is one of the best halls on campus. You become really close with everyone you meet, and CIVICUS offers you so many opportunities to further get involved on campus. I would only caution that it is a siginificant time commitment. Not only do you complete service projects throughout the semester, but you also have to take 14 credits over 2 years. Despite this, I would say that it is pretty manageable. I would 100% recommend joining CIVICUS if you’re invited!

How does the CIVICUS program compare to Honors? Is it by invite only- if so, how many kids are invited each year? Should I feel disappointed that I was not asked to be in the Honors program, or is this an equally prestigious program? It sounds amazing but I’m having trouble finding info on it outside of the University itself.

I’m pretty sure that CIVICUS is invite only and according to their website, around 130 students are in it. However that number does change from year to year but it’s not as big as honors or scholar for sure.
