UMD Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

This is horrible! Can you appeal to them about honors and FA and remind them that this was entirely their fault? Or is your kid not that interested anyway?

At least you got the admission, but what an ordeal. So sorry!

It could be worth talking to the director of admissions but note few get merit and few get Honors - although they have several levels of Honors programs.

In other words, you should absolutely ensure you get full consideration for all - so it’s worth lobbing the call. But most admits will get neither.

You are right that it is not guaranteed my child would have gotten merit aid or a special program. But their stats and background are such that at least some special program would prolly have been offered.

My kid wants me to drop it so I will. Plus I have already spent an hour on one phone conversation with UMD. I don’t really have time for more.

I think you should write the Dean of Admissions and show your timeline and the letter they provided saying the SAT is lacking.

Give him the trail
then wait
you’re right, you can spend way too much time but if you’re not going there anyway.

This is one of those things - for future readers and perhaps you did this - but you have to stay up on the portals to ensure they show everything is in. This is unfortunate this happened and not saying it could have been caught earlier if the portal was showing no SAT - but it’s certainly a thing for any college one needs to check and if anything shows missing, to follow up on.

Is anyone else having trouble with the multi factor authentication? Does your directory ID need to be activated first?

My son and I had trouble just activating it. After a call to admissions, it was bc he did not include his SSN so different number was assigned to him.

DD is officially #NowATerp!
Had that profound moment on campus during our visit where we saw it happen— she found her place.
All of the tours and interviews and virtual sessions at all the universities and all the waiting and wondering over all these months
and then it just all clicked for her at College Park.
Now it’s official and it’s hitting home: she’s really going away to college. I want to cheer
 and cry
 at the same time.

Aw, congrats! I kind of hope mine feels this. She just got another scholarship for music and now has the equivalent of full tuition! It will be hard to pass up, but we live 15 minutes away, so it would take some reevaluating for a kid who really wants to go off on a new adventure.

That’s great- what tour did you do that made such an impression?

Congratulations to your daughter! I understand exactly your daughter’s “wide open spaces” desire
mine felt the same way! We are about an hour away and UMD was just too close for her - or so she thought. But once she got to campus and realized that it felt like a different place — and once we talked it through and told her after we dropped her off on move-in day we would see her Parents Weekend and then Thanksgiving (unless she really needed something)
she started seeing things differently.
Good luck to your daughter with her decision!

We’ve actually gone twice in two weeks because she was so surprised and delighted by our first visit! We did a regular weekday afternoon campus tour on the first visit - all of the students were admitted and checking it out. It was a small group and our tour guide was outstanding. Then we did a Virtual Admitted Student program for additional information. Finally she wanted to go back and talk to an advisor in her major as well as some of the staff in the LLP she was invited to
both were wonderful experiences! We also made it a point to meet up with a friend of hers from high school who is currently a freshman, had a UMD Dairy ice cream, watched some baseball practice and soaked up the entire campus vibe. It was this final visit that sealed it for her. :raised_hands:

Yes, mine seemed to think she would live at home. I was like no no no!!! You would live on campus. And then she got into Hohum which seems to be in some of the nicest dorms. I hope she can tour that. I think it would go a long way. I kind of wish we were an hour out. I think that would help! We are literally 15min down the road. But, we’ll see how it goes. Glad it all worked out for yours!

My daughter is currently a senior and my son will be a newly admitted freshman. We live about 45 minutes away and at first I didn’t want my daughter so close but it has been fine. I have another daughter about 4 hours away, and I prefer the closer one. It was so nice to be able to go to UMD tailgates, provide food for her friends and meet them- it gave us opportunities to see her and her friends, which I didn’t have with my other daughter because it was too far for a day trip. I’m looking forward to my son going there and being able to meet and interact with his friends. My UMD daughter didn’t mind when we visited because we brought her food!

Some of my fondest memories at college was when my roommate’s parents came and took us out to dinner, did a tailgate, or just toured around. Such great and generous people!

I agree Food = Love = Great memories for our college kiddos!
And we will for sure visit and hug and feed her and her friends! We just know from our older two - who both went to college in-state, that they initially want the assurance that we won’t just “drop by” unannounced or regularly! We want our last one to go have a great authentic college experience and to figure out things, learn things, and grow on her own. But being just one hour away, instead of 8-10, will ultimately prove to be a benefit for all us and we know she will see that sooner or later.

I agree. Being within an hour or so of UMD can be a real advantage. You never know what might come up and it made some of the winter/summer move outs and move backs a lot easier. We did not have to pack up / unpack everything all in one trip.

We always enjoyed walking around UMD when we visited and it was nice to have lunch at Busboys and Poets or the Hard Times Cafe.

We’re looking forward to Maryland Day again this year. It’s always a great time.

We found Busboys and Poets when my daughter was a sophomore, and I sometimes try to visit her as an excuse to eat there!! I love that place!

DS is liberal arts and stuck between Schreyer Honors and U Maryland(not honors). Thoughts?

Are you in state or oos? PSU in state is one heck of a school, as is UMD in state. The cost difference is substantial.

We are in state Pennsylvania and Schreyer would be half the price. He has so many friends going to Maryland and not a single one going to Penn State. He is afraid he won’t find a friend group like him at Penn State and already has a friend group at Maryland. He also thinks Maryland is an all around more competitive school to get into. Help?
