but soooooooo many little details are whirring about and i am soo nervous about moving so far away!!!

Congrats!!! You will be fine. You will meet lots of supportive peers. I can almost promise that by the end of the first semester you will wonder what you were worried about. Best of luck!!!

asseenontv, congrats on your choice. I’m from Virginia and now can say I’ve been on both the UMD and Tulane campuses. No comparison - you made the right choice. I know it’s far away and that was an issue with my parents, but most incoming freshman will be from outside of LA.

It’s exciting and scary at the same time to have chosen the school that isn’t the easiest for your comfort level. The excitement is from knowing you are stretching yourself and the scary is for the same reason. Once you are on campus this August, the scary part will diminish as the excitement part takes over. You will become more and more proud of yourself for taking the chance.

We’re proud of you too Best of luck in your new school and city! I’m going there in two weeks for graduation and feel bittersweet about my S’s time being over there. But I’m cheering to the Superdome rafters when they announce his name that he’s actually graduated, and on time in spite of everything.

Keep us posted on how you end up feeling come September, ok?
PS Re your question on the printer—D prints out all her notes and uses them to study so she’d be miserable not having her printer handy, at her convenience.
She uses it to death. S, on the other hand, has a whole different studying approach so hasn’t needed his so much. I think the best answer depends on how much you think you’ll really need it and the convenience of having it in your room.

thanks for all the support and encouragement!

now…i only have less than 24 hrs to submit my application for the Wall residential college dorm…

any tips? do most people get in?

No tips for this one, but I know getting in to Wall is not easy, it is a popular dorm. It actually might not hurt to put down that you are somewhat shy (is that fair? If not I apologize) and that it might be better for you if you could ease into college life in a somewhat less “intense” environment than Sharp or Monroe. Or I could be completely wrong on that. Suggestions, anyone?

So…I heard a lot of ignorant kids at Tulane will yell out racial slurs…

i’m kind of scared because i am a minority and i dont want to be like… targeted because of who i am

I find it hard to believe that this happens at Tulane any more or less than most schools, and probably only when someone is drunk, but I will leave it to current students to comment. I was there for 4 years when there was no such thing as political correctness yet, and I honestly cannot recall anything like that. Given the greater awareness and tolerence today, it just seems unlikely other than a few isolated incidents, but again, I am not there now so please, current or recent students respond to this ugly allegation.

well, i actually did experience it when i was in new orleans. i kind of brushed it off my shoulders…and those boys were drunk (on the streetcar)

but if i have to deal with that every day…

“When my parents came to visit during parent weekend, there were a group of SigEp brothers who started yelling racial slurs at me and my parents. I mean seriously…are you kidding me? You’re like 20 years old, grow up! I also won’t forget about how they flicked off my dad when we got into our car. Students at Tulane are just so self absorbed. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even feel comfortable being on campus.”

uhh… i dunno why they bleeped out the website name…

I am a freshman here, and while I do not doubt you, I would like to point out that I have never seen nor heard of any such intolerance.

Yeah, although when drunk, who knows. But that would be true at Maryland also, or anywhere else. Unfortunately, sometimes people are just asses. I really wouldn’t worry about it. Certainly if there is anything out of the ordinary, like a certain frat being particularly abusive or anything that seems like it is more that an isolated drunken incident, go to the Dean of Students immediately.

We are Asian and my son goes to Tulane. A few times we were there, we didn’t experience any racial intolerance. I have asked my son if there are any weird things going on at Tulane towards minorities. He basically said, if anything, it was him who tried to take advantage of the fact that he is a minority in some occasions (he was half joking when he said that).

I wouldn’t take what a few drunk fraternity guys at any university in the country to be representative of that university. New Orleans is about 70% african american and about 28% caucasian. While Tulane has a much smaller percentage of it’s population as minority, 75% of the school is from more than 500 miles away. I can’t imagine people that are that racist would come to a university located in a minority rich city like New Orleans. That being said, isolated incidents do happen. It’s horrible when it does, but it is extremely rare and usually alcohol fueled. I’m sorry to hear that anyone has ever had that sort of experience in my hometown and particularly at my Alma Mater.

thanks for the feedback

i am getting kind of stressed out about a LOT of things…

-Orientation and stuff
-Math and foreign language placement tests?

also, does anyone know anything about the creative scholars program? do you have to be a part of that since ur freshman year? how do you apply? and is global and community health considered a science major?

oh, and im worried about the academic advisors…are they like the high school guidance counselors? how do they get selected to be ur advisor? in high school, they do it by last name…and i was lucky to get the only good guidance counselor…the other ones did not help at all…and im worried my academic advisor will be like that…

asseenontv - OK, now you are obsessing. Understandable, but not helpful. Will everything be perfect at Tulane? No, of course not. A lot of time you have to be persistent and make things happen. It will all work out, like it has for hundreds of thousands of students before you.

As far as advisors, I am not sure how they do it for freshman, but fairly quickly (I think) they will give you an advisor in your major, if you declare one, or maybe even if you tell them you are leaning that way. Someone that is or recently was a Tulane student will let you know, I am sure. But just relax, and try not to stress. Stressing about these things will make it more likely it won’t go the way you want. Taking things as the come and calmly working through them will work for you.

Ok, I may sound really stupid, but I am a first generation college student in the US but um…i dont really know what school i am in. Is it the Newcomb-Tulane college? Because I have to circle on the immunization sheet which school i have been accepted to…but i dont remember declaring a specific major which would lead me to the school…
