UMDCP vs. University of Miami vs. Tulane

So I got into all three of these schools (and more, but it's pretty much down to these three) and I am honestly torn between them. Lately I've been leaning towards Maryland because I'm in state and the school's vibe is really starting to grow on me, but my dad wants me to go to Miami because we're originally from Florida and his "master plan" is for the family to move back down there. Tulane was the first school to accept me (at the end of November 2013) so I feel like I'll get a substantial amount of aid there, but unfortunately neither of my parents want me to go there because it is so far away. I guess I'm just wondering which school you would choose and why? I'm curious to see what other people think of these schools, and which one could offer me the best education (generally speaking because I'm still undecided about my major). Opinions from current students, alum, parents, and even other prospective students would be nice. :)

And thanks in advance, guys, every piece of advice I get is extremely helpful! :)

My son is at UMiami and my daughter will start in the Fall. I also have two nieces there. They all love the school. My advice is that you ask for a private visit. They can plan a day for you where you can sit for classes, visit labs and speak privately with the administrator or the Dean of the School you want to attend. It will be the best way for you to see if the school is right for you.

ddahwan, thanks, I plan on visiting sometime in March so that I can get the feel for it, I keep hearing that it’s a party school (which I’m not wild about) but I wonder how much that reflects on campus…

What I am starting to realize is that every school is a party school for some students. In a larger school, such as Miami, you should have no problem finding a group of students.

Maryland for STEM. “Master plans” of family moves never pan out.

You are looking at such different schools! Hard to compare in a way. My son is at Miami. My nephew is at UMD and my son’s best friend is at Tulane. I can tell you they are all happy with their choices, so figure out where you feel you will fit in the best. Every school has a certain element of partiers, but you will find a variety of people at all the schools. See which ones have clubs/ interest groups that interest you. Personally, I have found a big difference in the way you are treated at a large public institution versus at smaller or mid-sized private schools. That said, a dean at UT, Austin spent over an hour with my son. Ultimately, he chose Miami because it had everything he wanted and was smaller than UT, but it meant a great deal that the dean made himself so available. The deans at Miami did that as well but we expected that from a smaller, private school. Good luck with your decision. You have some great options!.
