ready about College Park Scholars program. Still don’t understand what it is and what the benefit is? Can anyone explain?
Was accepted to UMich with no money, temple with $18,000 a year, also Udel with $8,000 a year but still couldn’t get in for fall only spring. I really feal like maryland highly favored in state! Anybody else feel that way?
My son is accepted for Electrical Engineering and the scholars program. Like smashbro97 , I would like to know about the scholars program. can anyone tell me if he should be in the scholars program that is sponsored by Clark school of engineering?
Just wondering are you in state? I do not think there is a scholars program for just engineers.
I am in state. This scholar program is ‘Science, Technology, Society’ (STS)… and the description says “As one of Scholars’ original four programs, STS has a long history of educating students in the sciences. STS is sponsored by the A. James Clark School of Engineering and is housed in Cambridge Hall.”
Does the housing and dinning agreement commit you to UMD or is it just to see who/ what people are interested in?
@Adominic8 I agree!
i’m out of state. it didn’t specify a scholar program unless i missed it. mine says:
Major: COMPUTER SCIENCE
Advising College: COLLEGE OF COMPUTER, MATH & NATURAL SCI
what does this mean?
My daughter applied to College of Engineering and was accepted to Spring 2016 Letters and Science. Her stats are on par with others that were accepted - any chance of this changing? Or shall we move on…
@smashbro97 Your letter would say you are being offered the scholars program. then you would go online and sign up for the scholar program you choose.
smashbro97: Unlike many other Universities, CS at UMD is not under Engineering but under CMNS.
Here is link to the college: https://cmns.umd.edu/
My S has the same College for CS - also OOS
yes takanuva - i know is a separate school from engineering. for me that was a big plus! I just didn’t know if the advising school automatically indicated what Scholars program i would need to take. the acceptance letter did also indicate i was selected to Scholars
My S was admitted to Honors. I think your application to UMD automatically considers you for either ‘Scholars’ or ‘Honors’ or neither - you don’t get to choose. Its independent of the Advising College too. Congratulations btw!!
I was accepted for Spring 2016. I am OOS. I have 3.8 weighted GPA and 3.6 unweighted. My highest SAT score is 1830. I am a member of the National Honor Society with many versatile extracurriculars. In the e-mail they said I was accepted to Freshman Connection for Fall due to a “space limitations”. This seems unfair as surely hundreds, if not thousands, of students who were accepted for Fall 2015 may decide not to attend UMD. Will my status change? I was heavily considering UMD but I don’t think that I would choose to go if I could only attend with limited opportunities for my first semester. I have already been accepted to Penn State - University Park as well as a few others… so I have other options. Could someone please break the situation down for me? Was I not qualified or is it really because there is limited space? Please let me know. Thank you!
I’m in the same situation. I honestly have no clue. It’s so frustrating.
Is there any possibility that my status will change? Can I still be accepted for Fall 2015?
@Adominic8 YES! I am in the same situation. I am OOS and have higher credentials than MANY in state students who were accepted for Fall 2015. I was only accepted for Spring 2016. It really frustrates me because I was heavily considering UMD.
my daughter was also accepted to FC for Spring 2016. Her classmate was also accepted last night - to Fall 2015 and he did not apply early - sent his application on December 10, for regular decision! I don’t think FC is random and may be tiered to lower rated, yet acceptable candidates. We know a few students who previously started at UMD with a spring acceptance and they had no issues and loved the program. Currently there are 904 student who were accepted for Spring 2015 who started UMD in Freshman Connection in fall 2015 (from their website). It’s about 1 of every 5 accepted students. If UMD is a strong choice it should not matter and FC will not lessen the experience. If you are on the fence about UMD, it may matter to you.
Do you thing by applying Engineering Undecided automatically puts you in Letters and Sciences? It appears that most students that applied Engineering undecided got in for fall but in letters and Sciences, even many Honors students.
To all those who have been accepted to Freshman Connection-Don’t Panic While my older son was admitted directly into Smith School, my younger daughter was admitted Freshman Connection. If you really want to go to Maryland there is very little difference. Yes for that ONE semester ONLY you do need to take classes that start after 3pm. These classes are for FC students only. The classes count towards your degree just like everyone else. It worked out great for my daughter because she was an OOS student and made lots of friends this way because they all lived together and took classes together. You can participate in all the same activities on campus. Its not like you are walking around with a FC sticker on your back! The only drawback is housing. It can be on the expensive side if you need to live in the view or varsity but I will tell you everyone there seemed to have a great time. After that first semester you are officially in like everyone else and take classes anytime you want. Congrats
