@aoakes87 I dont think we need to know what we need to take, especially since we’re transfers. I think part of orientation is meeting with advisors. What I did was look at the 4 year plan for my intended major (CCJS) and figure out what I get credit for and what I still need and kinda figure it out that way.
I had orientation last Friday. They have a folder with all the classes you took previously and they have classes they recommend you to take. You meet with an advisor, pick your classes, then you get your ID. it was a pretty smooth process. Other than sitting through the intro session lol. But you walk away at the end of the day with your fall schedule and your UMD ID.
I’m one class short from being able to apply for Engineering, which I will be taking over the summer. So my advisor told me that after I finish my class to send my transcript in and my application will be reviewed.
Also to address housing, you might as well look at some off campus housing. Getting on campus is very slim. I’m meeting with some potential places after I take finals.
Hey guys, I got into the LEP too as a Business major. I have a very high gpa and a low family income but received extremely crappy aid. About $8,500 in total. How can I get more? Please help
@gunnerforlife UMD is difficult to get aid from. If that $8.500 was just from the school, you actually did better than most transfer students. I got around $19k in scholarships and grants, a mix from the school and the federal/state level. I am older and only my own income is counted, so I get full federal and state aid. Since I am a “non-traditional” student and worked in a lot of different fields before I went to college, I had appeal to the scholarship board and I lucked out with the board having people from my department on it. My school aid is a mix of a grant and the Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship, which had a deadline of March 1st. I think it is only for people first transferring, so you wouldn’t be able to apply for it next year.
At this point, nearly all the deadlines are probably finished for UMD scholarships and grants. For transfer students, for the most part, going in there are only the presidental transfer scholarships, the TAES, and school grants. Did you only get federal and state grants for your aid? Look into the business school’s departmental scholarships. It is probably too late to apply for any this year, but they could help next year.
The only other scholarship options I can think of through UMD are the Regents scholarships for transfer students. I believe the deadline for those are in June, but you must have an extremely high GPA (4.0, or 3.8 if you meet their financial need standard), and you must submit evidence of scholarly or artistic achievement (research papers, artwork, etc). They only have one or two each for the scholarships, and since I received a lot of aid elsewhere from the school I decided not to apply and leave the opportunity for others. I believe you must get the form for these scholarships through your current school. I didn’t find anything on the UMD site, I had to contact my school for the application. Go to your school’s financial aid office to see if they have the application available, I believe they are called the Weinburg Regents Scholarship.
Look here for some more information, occasionally they have links to outside scholarships that may still have approaching deadlines: http://www.financialaid.umd.edu/scholarships/transfer.cfm . Look under the college and departmental section too.
UMD is a public University, supported by taxpayer funds and a such has a limited number of scholarship dollars to give out. On top of that, when our new Governor took office in January 2015, one of his first acts was to cut funding for ALL public education in the state. UMD took a hit from that. That’s just the way things are.
I am not trying to sound mean, but be grateful you got 8,500! That is amazing. I definitely didn’t get that, and I could have defiantly used that. Contgrats on getting into the business school and receiving that grant!
@KonstantinLevin , thank you so much for all the info! cant thank you enough.
@aoakes87, Thanks. I would be grateful but my mom is a single parent, we have a very low family income and I have a cumulative 3.92 GPA. Based on that, I was hoping to receive more aid. I got a Pell grant worth 5k and a MD grant worth 3.5k. Dorms included my total price of attendance will be 23K. So there is a shortage of 15K.
Due to religious obligations, I am restricted in taking or paying any interest on loans. So unfortunately that is not an option for me. I live in Rockville, so my only option now is find someone who commutes to UMD and hopefully I can split gas with them in hope of attending UMD this fall.
Regarding the TAES scholarship, I was considering staying back another semester at MC and reapplying with the TAES scholarship for spring. But I believe the maximum amount they offer is 7K. Which combined with my 8K in grants will still only be 15k.
So based on the information above, its been a disappointing week for me. I have to accept that UMD is not going to be an option for me even though I meet the academic standard.
I wish you all the best of luck this semester and in the future going forward!
It isn’t too late to apply, is it?
I just received an email saying that I will receive on campus housing for the 2015-2016 school year
I received the email Friday, but its great that we got housing!
@Bennsheddy9 are you going to wait to find out your assignment or will you live off campus?
@beeeezyy I emailed the housing resident life people asking to be placed in a certain location. I will let you know how they respond
@beeeezyy Basically they told me that they have recorded my request and will try their best to accommodate my request but can not guarantee that it will happen
Were you put on waitlist before receiving confirmation on campus housing? if so, what number were you?
@itsjuskev I was put on a wait list, but I never knew what number I was. I just had filled out the housing and meal plan application on my portal. Then I received an email out of nowhere sayings that I had housing
@itsjuskev Im not sure if I was put on a waiting list or not I just received the email a couple of weeks after I filled out the application in my portal. I also received a letter in the mail today welcoming me to to the resident life at Maryland.
