In my experience, UMD for all of them. UMBC has nice dorm rooms w/ air conditioning but it’s kinda ugly. And UMD gave me more scholarship money & I got into their Honors College while UMBC’s Honors College rejected me (but I did do Meyerhoff…?).

And there are more people at UMD, more chances to make friends. It all depends on your preference.

About academic , if you have a chance, what do you think you will choose between:
1:- UMDCP Honors college vs UMBC Meyerhoff.
2:- UMDCP Letters and Science vs UMBC Meyerhoff.
Major: Engineering or Computer Science.

UMD is a much better school than UMBC. I’m from Maryland and where I live people do not think highly of UMBC at all.

But how to compare with UMBC Meyerhoff ?

Overall CP has better academics (though UMBC has a pretty respectable science program). One of the reasons I didn’t like UMBC was because it isn’t as diverse as college park. I don’t go to UMBC but on my visit there I had an impression that people just like to hang out with their own ethnic group. That happens at college park too but we’re so big that you don’t notice it. No comment on campuses as that was not a factor in my decision. Finally, UMBC is definitely more generous in terms of scholarships than cp. CP is odd and can give scholarships randomly (people getting into ivies getting less scholarship money than state schools). Just my 2 cents, so take it with a grain of salt…

Thanks everyone for all your opinions!

im just throwing this out there now to start with so you know, i HATE umbc. i was almost forced into applying there by my dad and managed to “accidentally” miss the “application deadline” lol…its not that its not a good school; its got solid academics; but umbc is basically a commuter school (or suitcase school or whatever you want to call it)…everybody comes home from umbc on weekends or goes down to umcp to hang out with them. umbc is def a lot more scholarshippy than umcp. umcp has a much more beautiful campus tho…umbc’s is very…boring. and tiny. and cookie cutter. and remarkably in the middle of nowhere despite being so close to baltimore. and umcp has the trains right by campus so you can go to baltimore or dc easily and dont need a car and theres tons of apartments and houses right off campus for you to rent when you move off campus. and umcp has millions of clubs and killer sports scene.

soooooo umcp>umbc social scene, campus activity, campus prettiness, off campus activity, convenience to DC and Baltimore
umcp~umbc academically, altho umcp probs has more standout programs (ie journalism)

thanks for the opinion.
i think umcp is probably the better place to go, but the amount of scholarship from both schools can change my decision

in my experience, umbc hands out scholarships like candy from a pedophile on halloween

Lol wow. I guess i’ll just have to see what happens

yeah I got spring’d at umd but umbc gave me a $2500 a year scholarship even though I dumbed down my umd essay for them like crazy (umbc required a smaller word count), and I submitted my application 20 minutes before it was due. lol

I love love love maryland though sooo :)

so basically umd is worth it even if you have to pay a little extra (since umbc gives more scholarship) ??

if you get spring’d, could you go for a semester to umbc and then start at umd the spring semester? or does it not work that way?

You are asking this on the UMD forum, so people here are obviously going to be bias.
I would go and visit both while the students are walking around campus.
IMO:
Academics- CP has the reputation, UMBC has decent programs tho.
You’ll most likely get about the same education at either one. Lets be honest, they are both just average schools.
Social activities- I would say CP. It has a more party rep- if you’re into that.
UMBC is NOT a commuter school, 75% of freshmen dorm. Although it can be rather quite on weekends.
Nicer campus- I would go check it out for yourself. A lot of people say CP, I like UMBC’s more. It depends on what you find “nice”.

Thanks for the opinion!

@zebradecoy when i said commuter school that mightve been misleading…i didnt mean that nobody lives on campus, what i meant by that is its a ghost town on weekends…my bad

@cammac
No prob, hey I seen you on the MSU forums. Funny… I don’t know many kids like me who are from MD and are applying to MSU.

born in detroit area and moved down by baltimore when i was 8…have bled green all my life (altho i was just a bit embarassed this past saturday…) haha you? msu isnt incredibly popular for people this far out, but i like it a lot

holy **** i was born in the detroit area too and moved by baltimore when i was around 13.
sooo weird. lol

About the fact of you supposedly get spring’d and then decide to go to umbc for one semester:

I would highly suggest NOT doing that. I was going to do that and I am glad I did not. For all my friends that did do that, they kind of regretted it. Some of my friends ended up enjoying umbc and decided to stay there instead of going to umd. My other friends decided to go to cp in the spring and they did not enjoy it because of the difficult transition they had to make. They were so used to the teaching style of umbc that they found it to be difficult to adjust to cp. It is a bigger school and has a different classroom setting than does umbc. It was tough for them and they lost some good friends they made at umbc. So i would defintely say NO to the umbc for on semester deal.
