I was looking for online AP music theory courses to take over the summer since my school does not offer the class. I know taking the test is not important and I don't want to take the test but I want to learn the material and also want it to put on my resume for applications. From what I can tell there aren't really any good courses but some people mentioned Berklee's online program (too expensive) and umiami's online course (only $300).

On the course description it says it is for future music undergrads (good musicians) but the material description is notation, intervals, scales, basic ear training and triads which seems very basic to me but I emailed for more information and Dr. Stinson says it is good for replacing a good high school level theory course but not enough to test out of college level theory. So this seems to be about my level. Here is the Link:

Has anyone taken this course or heard anything about it?

I am not familiar with either UMiami or Berklee’s courses, but my daughter took AP Music Theory online this year through Virtual High School and it was an excellent course that prepared her very well for the AP exam. Yes, I know she won’t get AP credit for it in college next year as a music major, but more importantly she learned a lot and enjoyed the course and I expect she’ll do well on her theory placement exams for college. Virtual High School offers a variety of online AP classes, and they are very legit. If your high school is a member of VHS, there is no charge for the course but if the high school is not a member (ours is not) it costs $800 for the full-year course. Expensive, but worth it if you can afford it. I don’t think they offer a summer class, as AP Theory is usually a full-year course–but you can check.

Edit: I think I found what you’re talking about. What did your daughter think of the work load (how many hours per day or week)? I don’t think my school is a member of any virtual programs. Did your school allow this course to go on her transcript?

There was a lot of work but she learned a great deal. Can’t really tell you how many hours per week, but it was significant. Her high school put it on her transcript as an independent study for which she received full credit. VHS sent grade reports to her school and to her and us on a regular basis and those grades were entered onto her school report card. I don’t know how well VHS is known outside of this part of the country (we live in New England) but I do know of a friend’s daughter who took other AP courses through them and they live in the Midwest—and her school is a VHS member which ours is not. If you want to take the course during the school year, you may want to speak with your guidance counselor at school to find out about your school’s policy regarding independent study. At my daughter’s high school it is very common for seniors to do independent study and the school has policies regarding what needs to be done in order to get credit for it. Hope you find this info helpful. My daughter really enjoyed the class and is very glad she took it. She just finished this week!

Thank you for the info dfbmd1. I think ap music theory will be a bit overload for me. Does anyone have any experience with the umiami online course?

Adimi24, people who delivery AP theory online have told us in the past to expect a combined 10 hours of online coursework and study each week. It’s fairly demanding. As I’m guessing you’ve gathered ;)

Haha yes I have. It seems way too intense for me, I’ll just wait until college to really get into theory. I’m just trying to figure out if I should take this umiami course?!?
