UMiami vs Tulane

Any thoughts on which of these would be a better fit for premed? They are the same price (roughly 100,000 cheaper than any of my other options) and I got into the honors college at Tulane

Maybe others on this site will give you more detailed answers, but I think that you should go to whichever of the two schools you feel more comfortable at, where you will thrive academically and socially, and wind up with great memories for life and also well-positioned to get into medical school. Remember, people get into medical school from a very wide range of colleges. Pretty much all the medical schools care about are your GPA and your MCAT score. Once you have those, yes, they might pick and choose about fitness to be a doctor, diversity of experience, personality, etc. Congratulations on getting into two excellent schools, both of which have good medical schools. You must have done very well as an undergraduate. All the best!

As the poster mentioned above, pick the school and campus and city that you feel most comfortable at. Consider non-academic social versus academic factors. For non-academic, does the idea of being close to the beaches and attendIng Miami Hurricane football games with 65,000 rabid fans on Fall Saturday’s appeal to you? Or does being in New Orleans, the Festival Capital of the world (roughly 130 festivals each year —Jazzfest, Mardi Gras, Crabfest, etc…) with music, food and culture, appeal more to you? And pick the school the has the better academic courses and program/major that you are interested in. For example, Tulane’s neuroscience interdisciplinary major in its school of science and engineering is one of the best undergraduate programs in the country for that particular major, with lots of biomedical research opportunities that is facilitated by Tulane’s Brain Institute. And Tulane’s focus on community engagement and required lower and upper undergrad community service requirement will allow you opportunities to engage in a pre-med outreach opportunities that could enhance your application for med schools. Each school supplies roughly the same number of applicants to medical school, taking into account that Miami is a bit larger school and has about 800 more students in the graduating class that applies to med schools. Check out this chart of the Association of American Medical Colleges:

Between Michigan, Miami and Tulane —at least those are the ones you are seriously considering, I really don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. Choose the place you feel most comfortable. Because as long as you perform well academically maintaining the high gpa you need for medical school, and do well on the MCAT, and have the necessary extracurriculars that med schools like to see—exposure to patients and the medical profession through volunteering or shadowing and communty leadership and engagement (this latter will be most easily obtainable at Tulane) you’ll be a competitive applicant for medical school!

@trackmbe3 Thank you so much — i guess visiting again is really the key for my decision!! They all certainly have good programs. And I did apply to major in neuroscience at Tulane so that is awesome to hear that that program is ranked very highly.
