UMiami vs UFlorida vs Oberlin vs Skidmore vs UMaryland College Park vs Binghamton vs FSU

Hey all! I have been researching the schools I’ve been accepted to LIKE CRAZY. My question is: Which school would you be most impressed with me attending? I’m asking you to consider these schools based on how selective they are, how they’re ranked etc. That’s all I want to know at the moment.

Disclaimer: Before you yell at me for being shallow and choosing selectiveness over personal fit etc. please don’t. I have been researching these schools ALL YEAR and I promise you that my choice will come down to much more than how selective each university is. Please don’t leave these comments.

School choices:

-University of Miami
-University of Florida
-Oberlin
-Skidmore
-Maryland
-Binghamton
-FSU

Thanks!

Why do you think this matters?

I’m literally just curious. I’ve made a giant spreadsheet of the cost of each school, the majors it offer, my happiness at the school etc. I promise you I’m not making my decision off of how selective the college is. However, I still think it’s interesting to consider.

I disagree, actually. This is about as germane a question when considering spending money and 4 years of your life as “which mascot do you like better?”

Ok! Thanks!

I knew this comment was coming.

If you are only interested in opinions about the rankings, you can look those up yourself. Does it really matter if I think UMiami should be ranked higher than Skidmore? Look at the actual rankings!

There are people in the world who have never heard of Oberlin or Skidmore, so will think Florida and Maryland are much better schools. Doesn’t make them much better, and neither does a ranking on a list.

I personally think Oberlin sounds most impressive, but in any case, I don’t know why it should matter to you.

They’re all good schools. None more impressive than the other. If we knew your intended major it might help. You really need to go by program. If you said CS then probably Maryland. If you said film it would FSU…

That said it doesn’t matter. Find the best fit.

So you had another thread and it said you want a small town or near a city - and you might do writing or communication.

So if you go from there, Oberlin is best on your list for writing -it’s a specialty. It’s a small town, 40 minutes from Cleveland. So that could work.

Communication - well that’s wide open. Miami, Florida and Maryland are all strong and FSU could be considered strong.

Skidmore, like Oberlin, is 40 minutes from the city (but smaller city - Albany). It’s also closest to skiing - if you are a skiier. But I’m not sure it hits your academics.

Yes, I do think it’s a silly question but since you asked, I’d say Oberlin sounds most impressive. But you have a list of small, medium, and large (nothing in between). All are great schools - but you have the public bureacracies, Miami which should be your mid size, personalized - although I’ve been less than impressed with my contacts to admissions and aid after my daughter got in, and then you have Oberlin and Skidmore.

You need to be happy with your four years. Do you want huge, sports, greek, and the like.

Paradise - Miami.

Or small and personalized.

That’s what you need to choose. Good luck.
