Umiami vs Umichigan for Marine Biology!?!

Comparing these two, trying to decide...

It doesn’t get much better than Miami for Marine Biology.

however, wait till Alexandre responds (he usually knows more)

Not to be a smartass, but wouldn’t the school closer to the ocean be the obvious choice?

For marine biology specifically, Umiami is definitely stronger. For biology in general Michigan is stronger.

Umiami has access to tropical reefs and they use that to their advantage.

If you are absolutely certain Marine Biology is what you want to study, I’d go with UMiami. If you think your interest might change, Umichigan is probably the better bet.

Aside from marine biology or biology in general, both are great schools, with Michigan being the clear frontrunner.

USNWR: Mich#29 UMiami#44 (Remember USNWR is a guideline, not a be all end all ;))

Umiami is very up and coming. They’re doing their ‘Momentum 2 Campaign’ generating another 1.6 billion for the university, and they have ambitious goals to “propel themselves into the uppermost echelon of higher education universities in the US.” Umiami has also risen more than any other university in the top 50 (USNWR) in the last 10 years. However, Umiami still can’t yet match Umichigans overal academics or reputation.

Both schools have similar acceptance rates of about 37%
Good luck!

Edit: I looked at Umich and I’m not sure they even offer a Marine Biology major. I think they have Oceanography though. I could be wrong… Someone who is more knowledgeable on Umich can correct me if so.

I’m also not sure any reputable ranking group provides rankings on Marine biology specifically but I did find this…

Michigan has oceanography as a specialization within the Earth & Environmental Sciences concentration, but there is no marine biology. I would sure hope you would check to see if a school offers a major before considering attending for that particular major.

Also, coquimom, that’s not being a smartass at all. That’s fairly sensible. The vast majority of top marine biology programs are in coastal areas. Field work is essential in the realm of university sciences, and if you need a plane in order to get there, it probably won’t work out. And Lake Michigan doesn’t count, haha.

^^^
Well yeah, a lot of my friends in undergrad school were marine bio majors and I just remember that half the time the only place I could find them was out at the marine lab! Made sense to me to suggest being near the ocean. ;)

Miami is a leader in Marine Biology. Michigan does not offer the major. It’s a no brainer!
