Umich 2017 Admissions Data

The data for 2017 admissions is finally available. It’s weird that it was never published online in Michigan Daily like other colleges. Here is the link

Here are some changes I’ve noticed:
-The freshman entering class this year is huge!! 7023 students. Almost catching up to MSU’s freshman size. The acceptance rate was below 25% before waitlists came out and I wonder why Umich enrolled so many students this year. Yield definitely went up and acceptance rate is now 26.5%. I know that the Honors class overenrolled this year and that not all honors students may receive honors housing. I wonder if there is enough housing for all the freshmen.
-Average ACT scores increased to 31-34. However, SAT scores decreased probably because of all the changes with the new SAT coming out in March and most students just relied on the ACT instead.
-More geographic diversity. lol now there are 2 students from Wyoming! Pretty good representation in all 50 states for a public university.
-Undergrad size increased and will probably increase to over 29,000 students in the future. Hopefully, the university has the resources to handle this.

Also, tuition has increased. 2.9% for residents and 4.5% for non-residents, which means over $47,000 tuition for out of state students. Umich sent an email yesterday explaining tuition increase because of decrease in state funding. Even though state funding has increased 1.9% this year, it decreased 40% since the 1970s when the state funded 65% and now only funds around 15%. Umich said that it ranks low in the top public universities in amount of state funding, receiving only $6600 per student from the state while UNC Chapel Hill receives $16,700 per student from the state. No wonder UNC has such a large percentage in-state enrollment and the cap on out-of-state students.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-uc-limit-nonresident-students-20170306-story.html This is an interesting article about the UC funding problems and the proposed cap on out-of-state students. I wonder how this will affect UC Berkeley and UCLA’s prestige compared to Umich.

7023 is large but they won’t all actually start in the Fall - #summermelt

@Eeeee127

I have been saying this for awhile on CC. Michigan has aimed to increase class size for about a 4 year period, starting with the class entering in Fall 2016. I had a pretty reliable source tell me this.

I thought Michigan was trying to keep its class size at 6600

@Eeeee127

I know for a fact that two years ago there was a plan to have a 4-year increase in first-year enrollment. I have friends who were in conversations with UM officials about this. I suspect that there would be some publicly available information on this (or it could be requested).

I know some people got assigned to apartments as their dorms

@thickmancollege

When you say apartments, do you mean Northwood or off-campus apartments? Were they freshmen?

Yes freshman and off campus

@thickmancollege

Are you sure? I was under the impression UMich housing guarantees housing for freshmen, and that they were still in the process of placing them in residence halls.

That’s what they said in the class of 2021 Facebook group

My friend said that when he was a freshman in 2014 they didnt have enough housing for everyone i think west quad was still being renovated so they had to put some students in courtyard apartments.

I think they should have just kept it smaller. It ruins the freshman experience if not all freshmen are in dorms
