UMich drops 3 spots in 2006 USNEWS rankings!

Yeah in MN a lot of people confuse it with Michigan State, it's quite annoying!

I find it strange how a school like Michigan gets no rankings in the princeton review. I thought a lot of people have positive views about it. The only ranking it got for 2006 is TA's teaching too many upper level courses. I never really liked PR's lists anyway.

well PR is dumb. -_- have you checked out their college match thing? it's SO BS. not even funny.

Redhare, Michigan does not fare well in the PR because of several reasons. I wasnot really surprised. I mean, according to PR, UC Davis is as selective as Harvard!

I was hoping that this drop in rankings would stop people from appling to UMich...

... they've already received 8,000 applications... ARGH!

8,000 already? Wow, that's amazing. It could hit 30,000 applicants this year. And Michigan is expected to accept only 11,000-12,000 students this year.

Are you sure about that? For Fall 2005, we didn't have 8000 applications until after November 1st.

It doesn't make an effing bit of difference that a news magazine, whose rating system is "influential" but terribly flawed, had a ranking move 3 points in a year. Don't get your self-esteem tied up with that kind of crap.

are you sure about 8000??

By the way, is it really bad if GSI's teach too many upper level courses? What difference does it really make if it's a GSI and not a professor? I just thought GSI's teach what the professor wants them to teach anyway.

Redhare, I took over 20 upper level courses at Michigan, and not one of them had a GSI teaching it...only 2 had TAs that were GSIs.

I'm sure... I went to a meeting from an Admissions counselor two nights ago and they said 8,000, telling me to "get my application in early!"

ALL of your intro big lecture courses are taught by professors (or sommetimes lecturers) and then you will have smaller discussions with GSIs. As your progress towards upper level courses, the classes become smaller (~15-20 students per class), and PROFESSORS teach them. For most 300 and 400 level classes this is the case. My English class this semester, 417, will have about 15 students and a PROFESSOR (who is actually a visiting prof if i am correct) teaching. So yeah don't listen to what critics of Michigan (haters) say.

All right, this I had to check out.

There are over 8,000 web applications started. A tiny fraction of them are completed enough to be submitted, and some of them may never be submitted (every year some students start the online app but then don't finish it). This is an increase over the number of web apps started at this point last year, but not (yet) an "OH MY GOSH APPS ARE UP 40%" kind of increase.

Hoedown,

Can you find out how far along each applicant is on his/her application before it's actually submitted? I figured it would be possible to find out how many have been started (since I remember having to register with Michigan before I began working on the application last year), but what you're saying seems like more information was available to you than that. Could the U see what's been done on the app. after every save, or did that information just come in after it was completely submitted? Maybe I'm wrong, but if I'm not, that's an awesome system you guys have going over there. (Well, it's an awesome system anyway, but hey... :))

what are the fall 2005 admission stats anyway?

Michigan Profile: A Highly Qualified Freshman Class for 2005
23,842 Applications
13,565 Admissions
6,000 Enrolled (Unofficial)
Middle 50th percentile of the class
High School GPA of 3.6-3.9 (academic courses only; un-weighted) 10th & 11 grades
ACT Composite of 26-31
SAT I Total of 1240-1400
22% with a 4.0 High School Academic GPA
44.4% with 3.90 or higher GPA
AP and/or IB Credit granted to over 3000 new freshmen

I agree, UMich is way underrated by college students/high school students and some average americans, if you say I go to MIT, harvard, or even UCLA/UCB people respect you.. but when you say I go to UMich, people are like so what? I go to ohio uni!...

I think the most common response you would get from saying you attend Michigan is "O wow, that's a good school!!" You don't normally hear people saying "Wow, so prestigious!"

reeses,

I don't have access to the web app system. And not that you were asking me to post more data, but I'll go on record as saying that even if I did have access, I would be unlikely to post much analysis here. I see my role here as correcting misconceptions and misinformation where possible, while still revealing the bare minimum of anything interesting, useful, or titillating. LOL.

I do not know enough about the system to know how much Admissions can track (or access) the progress or contents of uncompleted online apps. As you said, they can (at a bare minimum) tell that they've been started. Towards the end of the admissions cycle they sometimes send reminders to people who started them to see if they intend to finish. At some point they purge them, but not without some gentle pokes first.
