If UMich gives special care to minority students who have to overcome more difficulties than us to get to college, I can understand. However, at least, the race of a student must not deduct his or her “points”, like Asians in this document. No one can choose his birth and race.
I benefit from this “system” as a minority, but I still think it’s really harmful how they’re deducting points for Asian students. I see how they’re “taking into account” difficulties students faced, but it being represented as a “point” system is extremely messed up. I don’t like how they’re like, “yay, you experienced trauma, here’s an extra 6 points.”
I didn’t look closely enough to find the Asian slur on my own, but the community college deduction stuck out to me. Competitive colleges, especially a state one like Michigan, highly value community college experience, especially as they demonstrate achievement and grit and help to expand diversity. I agree that was a red flag and conflicts with both philosophy and results.
The Sasha Obama thing seemed tongue-in-cheek given that Sasha transferred out of Michigan.
The admission document may be off but it is well known that Umich has a point system and has been apart of it. The prior format was struck down by the supreme court in 2003, but Umich has had some of the most prolific affirmative action cases involving higher education (I have no idea what they do now). “But in a 6-3 vote, the justices struck down the affirmative action policy for undergraduate admissions, which awards 20 points for blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans on an admissions rating scale.” - NPR : Split Ruling on Affirmative Action
Also the +20 for athletes is incorrect, for a school like Umich which is a P5 school in the Big 10, all the recruits need to do is meet the minimum requirements for admission. There is a reason for the college admissions scandal where they wanted their kids to pretend to be on a sports team. I think it is a helpful document to understand the process but don’t apply it as if this is what they actually use.
I wouldn’t doubt it counts for something, I was watching Duke basketball on saturday and somehow Jerry Seinfeld has 2 kids at duke. Just about every senator and politician from either party has kids at T20 schools. It’s probably not worth +50 but I’d think it counts for something.
There is no need to worry so much about your transfer admission. If you can’t get in that’s not a big deal in your life. Keep working on your current semester and find your interest and try your best to write your essay.
At the end of the day, college admissions have very little rhyme or reason, a good portion of it is our hard work, but there is so many other factors we can’t control. Good luck everyone, we will all be hearing back within the next 5ish weeks, so there’s nothing we can do but wait at this point
I apologize if this offended some of you. This was not my intention. Also UMich never created such a “point system”, this was created by the person I was talking to. She has done extensive research regarding admissions, helping hundreds of students get accepted to Umich and similar top schools for 15 years, and after many years of interviews and stat/data analysis, aa well as talking to her husband in admissions, this is what she came up with. This effectively gauges the weight of different factors in admission, but UMich never created this specific “scale.”
