UMich LSA Vs USC for CS major

My son went to USC. He did 2 summers interning at Amazon. Graduated in the CS Games Program at USC and works in virtual reality game programming. If your daughter wants to be in the entertainment industry, USC is the place. The alumni network is wonderful.

Otherwise Michigan is also awesome for CS. You can hardly go wrong.

Thank you all for your support and help… My D committed to UMich after a lot of thought… It was hard to let go of USC as she loved that campus as well… She went with UMich as she was receiving ~20 credits from her IB diploma
giving her the flexibility to major in CS and potentially a minor in Entrepreneurship or business from Ross. She also liked the flexibility offered by LSA CS program to experiment more liberal arts curriculum.

While USC also offered 20 credits for IB, the mandated courses to major in CS were fixed and she still had to do 128 credits to satisfy the program requirements…So, the 20 credits would only mean she would graduate with 148 credits which is not much value… Sharing this information for the benefit of others in a similar situation…
She also felt that Ann Arbor will give her a more American college town experience…

Glad she had two good choices and hoping she will be super happy at UMich… Thanks again to all who helped with their inputs…

Thanks for updating us MomFromIndia. Your daughter has chosen wisely!

Go Blue!

Congrats, great choice!! LSA students were at Facebook today!! Lots of opportunities for CS majors!!

@MomFromIndia. Congrats! Given your daughter’s interests, she might want to take a look at the following programs at Michigan:

http://innovateblue.umich.edu/university-of-michigans-growing-entrepreneurship-programs-among-top-in-the-nation/
http://cfe.umich.edu/courses/
“the University of Michigan was recently ranked as the nation’s 7th top institution for undergraduate entrepreneurship education, according to the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine.”

She might also want to consider the Engineering Global Leadership program, a 5-year BSE/MSE program in your field of engineering, with your senior year split between the CoE and Ross –

@MomFromIndia in the above article is this program

My friend son just did it with some friends that started a group. They got a $5,000 grant to boot to help their group. There are tons of opportunities like this at your daughter’s disposal. Might as well get your money’s worth… Lol.

I would also suggest looking into meet-up groups in Ann Arbor. They have them on just about any topic. This is usually a mix of students and real businesses in the area. Great for networking. My son also did this instead of joining some Michigan clubs and this lead to other opportunities for him.

As some other poster said awhile back. At Michigan you can be and do anything you want to. Just have to look for it and find it.

So with this program you can arrange to take an instructor to lunch to learn more about this program or whatever interests you. Best part… Michigan picks up the tab!!! With minor limitations… Again Michigan will support you in so many different ways.
