UMich math placement test for music majors

I know this might seem like an odd question, but does anyone know if all freshman music majors at the University of Michigan are required to take the math placement test? I have conflicting info regarding this. Several sites say that ALL freshman are required to take it prior to orientation, but on my D's New Student Checklist, it says:

"All first year students must take the math placement exam before coming to orientation, except those in the School of Nursing or School of Music, Theatre & Dance who are not part of Performing Arts Technology."

My D is going to be a Voice Performance major...and I don't even see anywhere on her curriculum guide where she is required to take a math class...so I'm thinking she doesn't have to take the placement test. But elsewhere it clearly states that all music majors are required to take it. So-o-o-o, anyone know the truth? We emailed someone who we thought would know the answer, and their response didn't help at all ("Please consult the chart in your online orientation information -what you read before registering for a session -on placement test requirements." - yeah, that's where it says two different things).

Anyway, if there is anyone who has knowledge about this and can pass it along, I'd really appreciate it! Or maybe you know who I should contact? Thank you!

Hi, Saxlady. Mcson was a PAT major so he did in fact have to take math placement and had 105 as a pre-req (which he tested out of.)

For performance majors, I’d hazard a guess that it’s not actually required, but would need to see the actual curricular requirements for your D’s actual degree. Eg. if its music ed, I would take it anyway.

In fact, have her take it anyway. If she’s had any AP Calc, for example, she may be glad she placed in because then if she ever alters her degree, decides to get an LSA minor, etc. etc., she will be able to place right into the correct math class without having to spend time or money on the base math pre-reqs. So nothing to lose and everything to gain by taking it.

If however, she doesn’t really WANT to take it, call Dee Dee at the School of Music (the registrar) directly and ask. She will be able to direct you to the correct answer immediately.

Best wishes!

Thank you so much for the info! I figured there were enough people on here with UMich connections that might know who to contact. I’ll call Dee Dee directly. Unfortunately for me, my D did not get my math genes. I love math and had a difficult time deciding between being a math or a music teacher. My D hates math and struggles with it, so if she really and truly does not have to take any math course in college, she will be thrilled!! I, on the other hand, took calculus in college for FUN. Even though I had already taken it in HS. Yeah, I’m a nerd. :)

If your D intends to take any math class, then she needs to take the placement test. Same with science and language classes.
