Which one is a better school? I'm from California, and assuming I get into both, and none of my top top choices, which do you recommend I choose for undergrad?

I will be going into med.

I will be going into med.

I believe UMich holds more prestige than UCSD, though I’m uninformed about the quality of their pre-med programs.

Good luck!

Would you be able to afford Michigan?

UCSD is an excellent university; save your money for med school and stay in state. There is no significant difference between UCSD and Michigan as far as your odds of getting into med school. What counts are grades and MCAT scores. (Plus, with all due respect to Ann Arbor, Michigan weather… well… leaves a lot to be desired. San Diego on the other hand…)

^agreed. time for the old bread and butter…pros and cons list.

UCSD is an up and coming school. Within 4 years, it will probably be a top 30 schools (maybe when it gets off that point system…). It’ll cost you a lot less than UMich. I’m not a fan at all of the 6-college system, are you? GOOD WEATHER!!! Less socially active. campus archetiture (spelling at 12 a.m. isn’t good, lol) is modern.

Umich is more well-rounded, has D1 sports, has good grad schools (that I know of). Has better reputation around US and more alumni. HORRIBLE WEATHER!! (Umich went from my top choice to a school i didn’t even apply to because of this reason. I’m a cali kid too and im spoiled by the weather here) More socially active. More parties. Probably get more job opportunities as well. Very large student body.

Other factors to consider about UMich: Mascot name is cooler (this deserves serious consideration, would you rather be a triton or a wolverine–the latter sounds cooler), school colors are better

The real question is which one of these factors matter to you??

Darn, i just noticed I pretty much side-stepped your original question entirely. Well i know nothing about their medical school so No Comment!! But since your going med school, you want to save as much money as possible beforehand, so go to UCSD unless you like UMich a lot more. If it does indeed come down to these two schools, visit first, then make your decision.

k I have another question
why is umich so much higher ranked than UCSD/UCBerk/UCLA?

@awesomesauceness
I don’t believe UMich ranks higher than Berkeley and UCLA. Which ranking are you referring to?

US News and whatever list of colleges. Its right above cornell on there, which imo is crazy

US NEWS ranking shows that Cornell is 15th, Berkeley is 22nd, UCLA is 25th and UMich is 29th. So I don’t know what you are talking about.

UMich has never ranked higher than UCLA and Berkeley, let alone Cornell.

Maybe you are looking at the world ranking which isn’t the best indicator of an undergraduate teaching quality.
