I am trying to make a decision whether i should attend Umich for engineering as a transfer student. I am a pretty poor girl who is trying to become an engineer and I have two more years of school left. I will be entering as a junior. I am out of state and University of michigan has been my dream school for a while. Here is my financial aid award
umich grant 26,935
fed pell grant 2960
work study 1,500
loan 2,750
Somehow, the numbers do not seem to add up correctly.
https://finaid.umich.edu/cost-of-attendance/ says that the upper division out-of-state cost is $65,508 per year, or $32,754 per semester. The amounts you list add up to more than that, which should not happen.
$32,754 - $26.935 - $2,960 = $2,859 net price per semester, which you should be able to cover with either a federal direct loan or part time work earnings or some of both.
There are many excellent internships that pay reasonably well for motivated engineering students. You should plan on one or two during your time at Michigan should you decide to accept. That is a great FA offer. @ucbalumnus , upper division UG engineering and CS have a surcharge of appx $3000 for OOS students beyond the COA.
Yes I am an independent student so heres a summary again
university of michigan grant $18,450
Provost’s award grant $8,485
Fed Pell Grant $2,960
Work study $1,500
Fed Sub Loan $2,750
total is $34,145

all for one semester. so it is still $,2750 per semester. they told me this includes everything food and housing
College of engineering tuition is higher than LSA. Also, upper division tuition (jr and sr year) is higher. The general numbers given when you just google cost of attendance does not reflect these higher numbers.
One semester of upper division tuition out of state for engineering is $26,630.
Room and board for one semester is about $5600.
Books and supplies estimated at $524. That’s the general number. I assume it’s more for engineering.
Personal and misc. estimated at $1,227.
TOTAL = $33,981
