The May 1st decision deadline is fast approaching, and I am completely torn. I have been going back and forth for days trying to decide between the University of Michigan and USC. I was accepted to both of their business programs. From what I’ve researched, I know Ross is more prestigious and I think the program would be a better fit for me overall. I visited both schools and absolutely loved the weather and campus at USC. Coming from Canada, a break from the brutal winters would be a welcome change. I think it would be very fun to live in LA, but I know the area just outside of campus is a bit unsafe, and I also think being in a typical college town like Ann Arbor would be a good experience too. USC is also a lot farther from me, which might be a hard adjustment. I am planning on rushing at either school and am excited about game days, etc. I loved the school spirit at both places.
Is there anything I’m missing about the two schools and programs that could help me make my decision? What is the better choice, all things considered (program, job prospects, location, social life, etc.) Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you
I’m a UMich parent. Both schools are excellent with great spirit. USC will be slightly smaller in terms of class sizes and student population.
LA is an exciting large city. Ann Arbor is a wonderful college town. Crime is an issue at USC. But if you want to escape the Canadian winter, then I think you know the right decision. Job prospects and social life will be relatively similar.
The one thing you can do at UMich, but not USC, is walk to the football stadium with 111,000 other fans.
OP: You asked, as a Canadian citizen, about job prospects at USC-Marshall & at Michigan-Ross.
Is your intention to remain in the US after college ?
If so, have you checked out the requirements for a work visa ?
I should clarify, I’m a dual citizen born in the US and living in Canada. I’m planning on staying in the US at least for a while after I graduate.
USC-Marshall has recently experienced some controversy surrounding dismissal of its highly respected dean.
Between Mich-Ross & USC-Marshall, a significant factor is location. Some prefer a large college town while others prefer a major city.
I can’t really speak about the business school, but when I went to visit USC for their scholarship interview I really didn’t feel like safety was an overly large concern. I spoke to some of the students there, and they said that as long as you are smart you should be fine. USC apparently takes several steps to ensure the safety of their students - I think there is some app you can download that will get you a ride back to campus if you’re in a surrounding 2 mile radius, or something like that
