UMich v BoCo

I was just wondering which school you believed was better. What are the specific PROS and CONS of each school?

I do not believe that one is better than the other (although one may be a better fit for a particular student), they are just different.

UMICH is a conservatory style program within a major comprehensive research university. There are academic requirements for admission in addition to the artistic requirements. Ann Arbor is a huge college town. Students in the program will be surrounded by undergraduates and graduate students who are not studying the arts, and have access (as time and interest allows) to all that a traditional major university has to offer.

BOCO is a stand alone conservatory in Boston, a small city with a strong arts community. Students in the program will be surrounded by students who are all studying the arts, and have access (as time and interest allows) to all that living in a city has to offer. Boston is a great “college city” with many conservatories, colleges, and universities.

Both of these schools are highly competitive for admission. Both have many successful working alumni.

For differences in curriculum start with the online course catalogs, and then contact the idividual schools with any specific questions… ex. Is it possible to double major, is it possible to take additional coursework inside or outside of the major above and beyond the requirements, etc…

The pros and cons will likely be flipped based upon the individual students desires and school criteria.

Unless someone has attended both schools it will be difficult for someone to give you a specific answer about the more nuanced differences between the programs, but parents of, or students in each of the program should be able to answer more specific questions about their respective school.

Both are excellent. D didn’t audition for UMIch, but was accepted to BoCo. She got no scholarship or financial assistance.
