UMich vs. Binghamton vs. Duke Kunshan vs. Johns Hopkins vs. Carnegie Mellon... help...

I love UMich, but at like 65K a year i don’t know if it’s worth it, I’m a legacy so my dad would love it - and I panicked on the tour junior year bc I thought i wouldn’t get in

Bing I get the IS tuition (~22K a year, probably a little more), but the campus was lackluster/ lots of my credits would transfer though

Duke Kunshan (in China, 20 min from shanghai) - 55K a year, got 11K merit a year (renewable)- perks get to learn mandarin, diverse environment, cons - far!! (not a huge issue, i guess a plus and a minus), want to go to grad school in like england or the US [would it hurt my chances?]

johns hopkins/carnegie mellon - big name, big money (74K+) - like the campuses are amazing, but prob wouldn’t go to over mich

majoring in engineering/physics depending on the school - thoughts?? I need serious help… (my parents are surgeons, but I have two younger sisters so, maybe like 100K easy for college, prob willing to pay more, my dad said he was willing to pay for michigan - EFC of 243,000 but that is SUPER unrealistic, like almost didn’t mention it)

The Duke in Shanghai, China is the most interesting option. Fluency or proficiency in Mandarin for a Westerner should be quite valuable in the job market–especially if accompanied by an MBA.

My Daughter went to SUNY Binghamton…it was at the time the #5 best value public college in America. It is one of the flagships of the SUNY system.
She also picked because of the value (price vs academics) as well as the ability to transfer a bunch of credits(IB). She was able to graduate early and we paid for her masters because she got it all done in 4 years (degree in math + master in math education).

I would talk to my parents…say that you would love to go to UMich…but what is realistic for your sisters so they also get good opportunities?

Lay out the net total costs at each college.

For engineering, if the college is ABET accredited, you are going to get a similar education. So it is about net price, location, other opportunities.

DKU would definitely be interesting. It seems like a very rigorous program (sub 10% acceptance rate) and the Mandarin/global exposure would probably help you stand out. Is it worth passing up a school like Hopkins? That’s your call to make.

^^^The OP already stated she wouldn’t chose JH over Michigan. Four years in China is a long time and very, very far away. If your dad is willing to pay for Michigan, that appears to be your best bet if you decide no to Binghamton.

Duke Kunshan seems like an incredibly exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of something amazing! If you’re feeling really adventurous, I’d say go for it! Plus it has the Duke name backing it so that already gives a lot of weight to the degree, so I wouldn’t worry about that aspect too much. If you’re feeling the change in scenery is too much, the best bet for engineering/physics is Carnegie Mellon or UMich, although if Biomedical Engineering is an interest that swings things in favor of Johns Hopkins. Good luck though!

bella246, if you are wondering about Duke Kunshan, it is probably not right for you. It is definitely
a niche program, like Yale NUS or Michigan Shanghai Jiao Tong University. As others have mentioned, an excellent opportunity, but it is not for everybody. Perhaps you are hesitating because you want a more “traditional” college experience. If that is the case, Michigan is probably your best bet, if your parents can easily afford the CoA.

For some posters - it would seem that the Duke lunar program based on the moon would make sense. Lol.

No way for my money. Go there as an executive and live in Honk Kong.

Go to Michigan if it’s affordable for your family.
