UMich vs. UIUC

Hey, like the title I've shortened down my lists to those two and very unfortunately, both are giving me about 10,000 in grants and expect me to pay up about 40,000. Is both colleges worth going for 40,000 a year? My parents' EFC was calculated to be 7000 and is 10,000 in grants fair at all? Should I even bother appealing? Also, which college should I go, considering I'm majoring in math.

I’m guessing this is something like:

Cost of Attendance = 50k
Grants = 10k
Balance = 40k

If your parents can come up with their 7k in EFC, that still leaves 33k that has to come from somewhere. For your freshman year you can only get about 5.5k in Stafford Loans which would mean that you are still short something like 27.5k.

You can’t afford either of those universities. What other options do you have?

the only other option is purdue which also gave me 40,000 in loans along with 3000 in grants… so that really isn’t an option. Or I could follow my parents when they’re going back to their country in the summer and apply to colleges there. I was born in Illinois while my parents aren’t citizens or permanent residents, so that cut back on a lot of the loans I could have gotten as well.

UMich definitely has the better rep, so if all else is equal, go there!

Did you file the FAFSA? Did you apply to any home-state public U where you live? If your parents have been living and working and paying taxes in the US, you should have in-state status in the state where you live.

As a US citizen, you do have the option of staying behind when your parents leave, finding a job, finding a place to live, and starting out at your own local community college. With a Stafford Loan, there is every chance that you can pay for the tuition and fees at your community college. Pop by the admissions office, and ask.

i’ve filed the FAFSA and they’ve given me the 3500 for the stafford and 2000 for unstafford as well the 3000 for work study. My parents work as diplomats so I wasn’t really qualified for instate tutition, and I wasn’t too willing to go to my state schools either. My parents would probably take me back with them to their country if I say I would stay in the US for a community college, so I’m really torn right now. UMich was what I really wanted for all of my high school career and now…

Pick up the phone and call your state universities. Double-check your residence status. You still might be able to make that work.
