UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

40% for in state. Around 20% for OOS.

@nikhil99 I think they lied to you. If you go to the Michigan CDS, you can see that they DO consider state residence. I’m not sure why they told you otherwise.

@UofMorMSU that’s what I thought! I’m not sure why they would lie so I gave them the benefit of the doubt lol
Odd…

If you call admissions, yes they will tell you that residency does not matter. I made that phone call myself when my daughter was mistakenly (OBVIOUSLY mistakenly) categorized as out of state (a mistake that has now been rectified). I was told by admissions that residency does not matter. But I also spoke with someone outside admissions who said that indeed, residency DOES matter. That out of state students face a higher “bar” than instate students. And this makes sense, doesn’t it? After all, U of MI is a state school. They are under pressure from the MI legislature to maintain a certain percentage of instate students, even as state support has dropped.

Also, I do not know this, but I suspect that U of M is not need blind in admissions for out of state students.

For people who received invite for a HAIL interview- I still haven’t heard from my interviewer yet (after already sending an email), should I call the HAIL office or should I send another email to the interviewer?

@shinoninomi , I would call them. I’d call the HAIL office on Monday if you still haven’t heard from your interviewer by then. Worst case scenario, you’ll be in the same situation you’re in right now.

Has anyone found out already or was that one poster who claimed to be admitted a tr0ll?

@DryMango No one gets their decision until December 16th at the earliest so probably a tr0ll.

Hi everyone!! I applied EA and I’m anxiously awaiting my letter!
I just keep reminding myself that everything happens for a reason and I’ll end up where I’m meant to be! (And if not- transfer LOL)

Hi everyone!
I am an international student and I submitted my EA application a day before the deadline.
But I’m still listed as “Early Action-Requested” on the Wolverine Access website .

Can someone explain? Is my application still going to be considered for EA or not?
Thanks!

@LegendOfkarl3 - that is a question you need to ask the admissions office

@LegendOfKarl3 Hi - I too was listed as Early Action-Requested until last Saturday. What happens is they take all of the applications that were in by Nov 1. Enter your information and “requested”. Then they go back and look at when your other information arrived. Recommendations, school transcripts, test scores. So while you have requested Early Action consideration they have to make sure your application is complete. So much information is coming into the school that they don’t actually match it up until your application is in. Then they work backwards and match the other information from other sources.

For me, my test scores showed earlier in 2016 but my school transcript showed a date mid November as well as my recommendations which scared me. After calling Michigan I was assured that this is when they “entered” the information into the system and it wasn’t until they confirmed my application arrived by November 1st that they went back and looked at the “arrival” date of the documents needed for my application to be complete. Seems like double the work but that is the way they do things. So long story short, I was EA requested and my application changed to EA qualified. Now I wait with the rest of the 2021 class…good luck!

@emilycollege I feel the same way. If I don’t get in, I’m gonna kill it at my state flagship then transfer.

Exactly! So either way, everything will work out! I’ll pray for your acceptance though!!

@emilycollege I feel like emailing them and saying “If I don’t get in now, I’m transferring so just save yourself the effort of re-reading my application and admit me now” lol

Same ^.

One of the few things that I hate about UMich’s application cycle is 10 years ago, the majority of us would have gotten in with very little difficulty. But on the other side of the coin, imagine the competition in another 10. I feel bad for those students for sure. My message to them is to kill it in Second grade!

Also, does anyone know for certainty, beyond all doubt preferably (football reference), if the decisions will be released on the 23rd or 16th of Dec?

@UofMichigan1999 I know with about 95% certainty that they will begin releasing decisions around the 16th, but they might not finish releasing all decisions until the 23rd.

@UofMichigan1999 In 2004 the acceptance rate was 62.5%. 11 years later it is down to 28.6%. When our kids apply it’s probably going to be less than 10%.

The admission rates at UMICH continue to plummet, and rightfully so. @binky17 I don’t think they accept the “tippy top” of applicants in EA. UMICH has become very concerned about yield. I suspect they use some sort of formula to decide which highly qualified applicants will accept their EA offer of admission - and focus on those. Given their admission numbers they probably have a pretty good sense of those odds. Looking through this string, there are clearly some very qualified applicants who are using UMICH as a safety school. The admissions office is trying hard to exclude those folks. Why would UMICH not be considered an Ivy equivalent by applicants - clearly equally rigorous, if not as rarified?

On a different note, sympathies to all GO BLUE football fans who were watching yesterday. Very tough game and sad conclusion. But, what other school (Ivy or otherwise) can provide that kind of spectacle with great academics? On to winter hockey and spring women’s softball! GO BLUE!
