@educationfan In addition to what @Eeeee127 said, there’s a buttload of classes that LSA students have to take to transfer to CoE. They have to take Calc I (4 credits), Calc II (4 credits) (and if you have AP credit for Calc I and/or Calc II then you have to take an additional math class, like Calc III), Physics I (5 credits), General Chemistry I (5 credits), Intro to Computer Programming (4 credits), and an English course (4 credits). That’s a total of 26 credits over the course of 2 semesters, and if the average student takes 15 credits a semester, well your entire schedule is engineering pre-reqs. They take AP credit for Physics and Chem, but even with that, you’re still looking at 16 credits worth of classes to take.
Super bummed, I got deferred [OOS Engineering]:
SAT 800 math 800 reading 680 writing
800 math2 800 physics
4.00 uw/4.88 w GPA
4/5’s on 10 AP tests
valedictorian
General Activities: AP scholar, Ntl Ap scholar, National Merit commended student, school departmental awards (2 years science, 1 year in english), won state competitions in science and business, recognition at model UN conferences, organizing a TED talk, leader of a club devoted to educating females in Mali, all county varsity athlete and captain w/ coach awards
president of exec SGA and NHS + leadership positions in 9/10 of my activities
internship every summer (40 hrs last year at well respected university laboratory, and continued through school year)
I loved my main essay (friend’s mom reads for ivy [alumni] and state school[professor] and she said it was great)
I put heart and soul into Mich essays but I don’t love them anymore…I definitely showed effort and interest though, in hindsight I sound awkward is my regret.
I know one rec is AMAZING!! (favorite teacher I am very close with), I trust the other rec is good if not great, and my research mentor added a supplement.
It is my top choice and I’m really torn up because I was planning on going here… are deferral decisions released all at once or sporadically? any idea when they may start coming out? Does anyone think I still have a chance?
also the post above is not reflective of my writing ability, it is late on Christmas but I am just now getting around to commenting…sorry for grammar issues!
did anyone get rejected from early action? So far everyone I’ve heard have gotten accepted or deferred
Is there a groupme for Class of 2021 LSA students yet?
@emxplusb Reading your stats was just like reading my son’s who also applied to CoE and got deferred. The good news you will certainly get in. The bad news that these deferrals leave a bitter taste in your mouths. Michigan is clearly playing a game, not only the ranking through the improved yields, also by deferring high achievers and accepting them during RD means no merit scholarships, so you will have to pay full OOS tuition. I am definitely falling “out of love” with Michigan due to the complete chaotic approach to not only the release of decisions (no dates, times etc), but also because of the games they play themselves but also seeding similar ideas in the kids minds (LSA vs Eng). After visiting them and attending their info session they made it quite clear that being accepted into LSA and later transferring into ENG is much easier than being accepted straight to CoE. I did ask my son if he wanted to apply to LSA and later transfer to the CoE to ensure his admission in the early round, but he insisted to play by the rules, and so did you. If Michigan will continue accepting students with mediocre stats and only a handful of overachievers (for the sake of the ranking and merit scholarships), they will be jeopardizing the whole quality of their engineering program in the long run.
@emxplusb Your stats are fantastic! Write a letter of continued interest. If possible, have your guidance counselor from your school tell Michigan that you will attend if admitted. I think you have a good shot.
Are you sure that kids deferred to RD are automatically out of merit money? I also totally dislike the games Michigan and quite a lot of other schools are playing with high achievers My child is upset as well with all the deferrals
If I was accepted to LSA Early Action is it still possible for me to apply to Ross before the regular decision deadline. I have changed my mind on my career since November and would like to have Ross as a potential option. However, I do not want this to effect my LSA decision in any way.
You were supposed to submit your ross portfolio with your common application in the beginning so idk if they will let you @hssoaf
@educationfan Please don’t get the wrong idea about Michigan as a whole. They’re not trying to play games and it doesn’t really have anything to do with merit scholarships (Merit Aid is rare for OOS students in general); it’s mostly due to the volume of applications they receive, thus Admissions always kind of scrambles towards the EA decision release. Even if you have fantastic stats, sometimes they just don’t get around to reading your application. The Engineering programs are fantastic and all CoE students I know absolutely love it! I hope you and your son will keep Michigan in your considerations
@HSSOAF it’s not too late to apply to Ross, and you will remain admitted into LSA no matter what.
I really believe UM makes holostic decisions - Good luck to all.
@educationfan not trying to be rude, but maybe your son is not the god-send you think he is? College admissions is very different than what a forum, a guidance counselor, or your own opinions would have you believe. Best of luck to your son.
@emxplusb My son was also of the same sats, 3.97 uw gpa. ACT 35, 1520 SAT, OOS, National Merit commended student. differed from COE. Did you take their hail interview? He did, don’t know how he performed, he was a little shy to talk person.
I have been reading through this thread for the last few days. My daughter did get accepted (34 ACT, 1480 SAT, 3.97 unweighted, 4.98 weighted, 11 AP classes, commended, 4 EC that she is active in, 10 yrs of competitive soccer), she was beyond excited.
We visited campus in October, and went on a North Campus tour. She is very interested in Materials Science and Engineering so we contacted that department and arranged two meetings the morning of the tour with professors in MatSci. It took a few days of back and forth calls and emails to get everything scheduled. At the beginning of the tour they talk about the stats to get in (hers were slightly above the median), this made her wonder if she needed to try to increase her SAT. We contacted the admissions person that spoke at the beginning and asked her if my daughter needed to get a score over 1500 to better her chances. The response was “a slightly higher test score won’t make that big of a difference. Make sure her essay’s are excellent.”
From all the replies, and looking at the stats of kids that were accepted and the ones that were deferred it does appear that UM is using a holistic process, and that they are looking for not only very good grades, but great essays and demonstrated interest in the UM.
Congratulations to all that were admitted, and good luck to all those deferred.
@educationfan US News doesn’t consider yield anymore. Its rankings are going up because their average SAT/ACT scores and GPAS are rapidly increasing—which has to do with admitting students of a higher caliber.
Michigan receives over 60k applications in a season and obviously scrambles to their deadlines in order to finish them. The California schools, which receive just as many apps, don’t even use Early Action for this same reason. Getting deferred might not mean that they’re trying to maximize yield but that they’re just incapable of reading your son’s application by the deadline. It’s nothing personal.
Also keep in mind that, despite your son’s good stats, his essays could’ve not demonstrated what Michigan wanted to accept. Michigan would not ask for 3 supplemental essays if they did not highly value fit.
Good luck to your son
Did any admitted students to CoE get an invitation to a Leadership Weekend? Being OOS I’m not sure if this is very similar to admitted students day, and would be worth the plane ticket.
@CCwillendme
I did not get an invitation to Leadership Weekend. What did the invitation say and when did you get it?

Please don’t belittle others’ success simply because your son was deferred. I see way more than “a handful of overachievers” being accepted and very few “mediocre” stats. If your issue is merit $, you needn’t worry. UM gives out so very little. Your S would not have gotten any anyway.
I’m sorry it is making you love Michigan less. But the process in itself a test of kids’ characters. It brings the first big let down many of them have ever had! It certainly will not hurt the quality of their program in the long run. They’ve been doing this for decades and their ranking just keeps going up!
Good luck to those deferred. Remember, tons of you will be accepted early next year, so don’t lose faith!
