UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

Hey guys, sorry I’m a little late to the thread. Does anyone know when the decisions are probably going to be released? I know it says BY Dec. 24, but it’s always before then, right?

@Isabelleg1 Probably Dec. 16th around 3 PM is the most likely.

You guys think it will be OK if I haven’t been contacted by my HAIL interviewer and I haven’t contacted him either because I honestly don’t want to do the interview? Will this play against me in the admissions process if I just ditched?

@422525 If he hasn’t contacted you yet I would try contacting him and hope that he doesn’t respond. That way when they send out the link to report if you never got your interview it would appear that you were interested but it was the alumni’s fault.

@as1799 you may have misunderstood my response. I was in no way suggesting that students are accepted simply because of legacy. All those accepted in the first round of EA notifications were certainly academically qualified, however other equally qualified or stronger candidates without UM ties, were deferred until a later date. The only non-legacy student admitted initially my child’s senior year was such a strong, attractive admit, she was even given scholarship money - almost unheard of for OOS students (she subsequently went to Duke on a full ride). To underestimate the importance of legacy at a school such as UM is naïve. Its clearly a factor that weighs heavily in admission’s decisions, when being evaluated against all applicants from any given HS.

Yes!

@10isMOM, @ill500: How does one update their legacy information, after having submit your application before the deadline (EA)? Please feel free to PM me!

@IvyBred I have not reviewed a Comm App for over 3 years but if I recall correctly, when entering your personal information, it asks for parent info including the college they attended and year of graduation. Hopefully someone more familiar with the format, will be able to answer.

What is HAIL? Is it a bad sign if I did not get invited for an interview?

Also, I think it is very funny how every single member on CC goes to a “HIGHLY competitive” high school. I could be wrong, but most high schools are just that: high schools. Some are tough, some are prestigious. Most are not. I doubt that your high schools are as good as you assume LOL

@10isMOM, even after I submit my application, since I didn’t include that information as I was unaware whether or not I had UMT (University of Michigan Ties), which I do. Clearly, I have already submit my application without mentioning I do indeed have UMT. Is it game over for me?

It’s not game over… you can still get in based on merit  plus they could probably find out based on your parents’ names and stuff that you put down. So don’t worry you’ll do great!

@DryMango The HAIL interview is an alumni interview for engineering applicants. You are only offered one if you are a CoE applicant and there is a willing alumni in your area.

@IvyBred Of course its not over for you! You and possibly others following this thread, may have misunderstood the point. For the first round of EA decisions, those desirable candidates with strong academic records and test scores, essays, EC, etc AND legacy; will likely be offered admission. This does not infer that students without legacy do not and cannot be admitted, My own child has no ties to UM. What I am preparing you for is that you may likely be deferred initially and have to wait patiently for the later rounds when decisions are released on waves. We did not get a definitive response until late February, even though my child applied EA. Hope this clarifies my comment regarding legacy, for you.

Does legacy play a significant role in decisions? Both my parents graduated from University of Michigan class of '82 and '86. They are both very involved in the alumni association and in theory I have the qualifications to be accepted (32 ACT, Outstanding EC’s, 3.5 GPA at an extremely competitive private school out of state). Do you think its possible that I would be accepted in the EA round? Could that be a deciding factor between getting deferred or getting in?

Had my HAIL interview. It was great. Psyched now more than ever to a Wolverine. Good luck everyone!

To summarize it - UMich has EA for instate applicants only.
The school cannot put it that straight for law/perception reasons, but any “differed” decision for any/all OOS applicants should be treated as saying - “You are moved to RD round (ohhh, yee the only round available to you to begin with)”

@Percent99 - is your statement based on past experience of applicants or any other source?

That’s not true I am OOS and I qualify for EA.

@Seacoast I think what they mean is that in-state applicants have a much higher acceptance rate early, so that OOS applicants could be qualified but still have a higher chance of getting deferred.

ahh thanks…I’m freakin…decisions can’t come soon enough!
