UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

Both of my OOS daughters were accepted EA so that is simply not true.

@Seacoast Don’t read everything you read on this website. 75% of it is completely false, like what @Percent99 said.

received an email from the admissions office saying i’m not being considered for early action. apparently, because my application wasn’t complete by nov1. after all the effort I put into this application, can’t believe this is how the process starts.

just wondering, does it matter when transcripts are received by umich? My guidance counselor sent them in a couple days prior to nov 1, but on wolverine access, it says they were received on 11/20??

Sorry to hear that @AnArcticMonkey
I’m sure you’ll work hard to eat good grades so you have a glowing mid year report and they’ll be forced to accept you!

@ab2020 - does WA show you as EA qualified? If yes, no need to worry.

@AnArcticMonkey - sorry about that. Do you know which part of your app was not complete?

@MedSciBud Yep!

also, do we need to fill out the ‘my scholarship profile’ on wolverine access?

@ivybred , why not call the admissions office and let them know you’re a legacy? I’m sure they can add it to your file.
@Percent99 are you just making it up as you go along?
@2017BBGH it’s definitely worth a try.

@AnArcticMonkey UMich asked me for another document (official results for an exam I took in 10th grade in another country) after the Nov 1st deadline. It wasn’t completely resolved until Nov 23; (lots of emails and phone calls). But, my application was still marked Early Action Qualified.
If you had a similar case where they asked for documents after the deadline, you could point that out.

Guys, guys calm down.
Of course what I said is not something you will find written down as a policy or something someone from the school will announce officially. And yes it is deducted from talks with friends/co-workers, stuff I have read here or else where on the net, including official data coming from UMich. Combined with a bit of common sense and logic.[ and nothing I said speaks bad for the school and/or is terrible for the applicants].

Look at the facts:

  • UMich is receiving enormous amount of applications ( 55,000 or so last year). Correct me if I am wrong, but no other school receives that many application AND HAS EA + decision in mid December.[ for example UVirginia with about 60% as many applicants announces its EA results much later in January, USC with about that many does not have EA at all].
  • Having EA as opposed to ED plan means that 40% to 60% of all those 55 K come for the EA round.
  • UMich seems to have one of the most involved decision making processes for admissions. But even if it was a simpler one, expecting them to come with a decision for all those candidates in the what? About 1 mo.(if that) after all the info is gathered and entered just does not seem possible.

So the school is left with a choice - for which group(s) of applicants is it most important the decision (especially if positive) to come as soon as possible? “Disappointing” the instate applicants does not seam wise, especially for a public school. One of the most painful things for a parent is rejection/deferral for you beloved kid by you own Alma mater.
I do not know if those 2 groups are absolutely the best choices, but they sure make a ton of sense!

So as a result those 2 groups are heavily prioritized! Does it happen for them to get to some OOS applicants as well? Sure, but do not count on it.

If you believe that UMich is as great a school as I do - it is totally worth the wait!

@Percent99 Do you think that in-state legacies have a huge boost to admission chances then?

@Percent99 you really are making this up as you go… UM has to have enough staff to read every EA application. It’s also wrong to assume that 60% of total applications came in EA. Also, UVA has stated that they don’t have nearly as many staff as other big schools, which is why it takes longer. If proof is needed, ask. I’m currently on my phone

one of the counselors at my school said that Umich has received 33,000 apps for EA alone- she worked in admissions at Michigan for several years and is close with admissions officers still there.

Hey guys, Im currently a freshman at umich studying CS in LSA. I felt like my stats would help provide reference. And all honesty, dont bring your hopes up and dont bring your hopes down. Michigan has been harder and harder to get into and its honestly hard to say that its a safety school unless you’re instate. I’m OOS since I’m from the suburbs of Chicago. Moreover, I’ve met people that are ross pre-admits with a flat 30 on their act along with my best friend that got denied with a 3.8 gpa and 35 act. If you guys want to know more about michigan as a school, let me know! Heres my stats:

ACT: 32, superscore 34. Math 36 English 33 Science 33 Reading 32 Writing 11

GPA unweighted 3.74 before deferral 3.7 after first semester senior year

// update
I got differed ea (like most OOS applicants in chicago)-- I actually completely forgot about Michigan because I got a 3.4 gpa first semester senior year. But turns out that my cumulative still ended up to be 3.7. I got my acceptance letter mid march.

@AAloneOrchid @MedSciBud I looked at my credentials. My ACT score rolled in after the 1st. I thought Umich, like most universities, accepts test scores that come in later. I should’ve been more responsible about this.
Should I call them up to confirm if it was just that?

@c011e9e thanks! really appreciate the encouragement

@AnArcticMonkey - Calling and emailing would not hurt. At this point, you got nothing to lose.

@AnArcticMonkey Yeah, Michigan is super strict about receiving materials before the deadline

I don’t really think there’s much truth to everyone from OOS who’s not a legacy being deferred. I’m from OOS and I know a few people who have been accepted EA in the past (only one of these people had any legacy, and they were a double secondary legacy, meaning a pair of their grandparents attended)
