UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

16th honestly since last year most people heard on the 18th

I am starting to doubt that Admissions can input all the ED results (i.e., applicants withdrawing from consideration due to acceptances) by Friday. They want to do this to minimize offers of admission going out to those certain not to attend Michigan (to increase yield, decrease % of acceptances, for USNWR rankings.) Duke and Brown, for example, have yet to announce their ED results.

@StressedOut2021 Probably Friday! and yes we are all super stressed

UMich called my house phone yesterday but nobody could find a phone in time and it went to voicemail. They didn’t leave a message. Does anyone know what this could be about?

Yeah some Ivy Leagues are still yet to give their ED students the notification so that could mass to a noticeable amount of applicants that were more than likely accepted at UMich. That would definitely help with the USNWR. At this point, UMich is close enough in caliber to some schools like Duke and The Ivys that they should also offer ED. If they would have offered that for our class, I would have taken advantage of that oppurtunity.

@jjjjjj14, no idea but I would definitely call back and ask what they needed. If it is not a big deal or would expose your private information, share what they wanted to us. This thread is starved of tangible news.

why is umich so popular in new york? new york already has very good schools like columbia, cornell, nyu that are like the same price as umich out of state.

@eeeee127 My daughter also applied to Cornell. As for Columbia and NYU, we want our kids to leave New York City to get a different perspective, especially because they say they want to settle in NYC. In my view, part of higher education is being exposed to a different mix of people, and Michigan is certainly that. Plus, do you REALLY have to ask why Michigan is popular – anywhere? I mean GO BLUE! What a rocking combination of academics and school spirit/athletics. Only Stanford can compare.

Long time lurker, first time poster on the UMich thread. I think Thursday is a very hopeful date. I received an email stating that I answered one of the questions on the supplemental information a certain way and they wanted a written explanation (no worries, I answered it mistakenly and all is well now) by Dec. 14th to further review. The admissions officer said several hundred EA applicants were sent the same email requesting an explanation. It seems hopeful to me to expect a decision by Friday if they’re still determining several hundred applicants’ decision on Wednesday

I can’t speak to what happened last year, but two years ago, when my son (now a sophomore) was accepted, the first wave of EA results came out on December 18 or whereabouts, but waves of EA results came out on Fridays for many weeks after that. There was no obvious reason why someone was accepted EA on 12/18 and someone else at the end of January or mid February. Each wave seemed to have acceptances, denials, and deferrals. Does anyone know if it was done the same way last year? Is there reason to believe all EA results will come out on the same day?

@twinsfanpg when did they send the email?

@brooklynilene I don’t think it can happen like that this year as on their website it specifically notes decisions will be out by the 24th. There is only 2 Friday’s left before that date.

@brooklynilene Last year on the 18th or whatever when they sent out the decisions, a lot of them being “deferred”. Michigan then for every week after that date on every friday, sent some of those people who received deferrals admit or deny–until everyone was notified

Some ed schools like johns hopkins don’t release decisions until dec 15 which leaves only 1 day to withdraw apps so I think the 16 is really pushing it for umich. Also, when people withdraw apps, will umich give those extra spaces to applicants they were going to defer and turn them into acceptances or will they not be changing any deferrals to acceptances between now and decision day? I really hope it’s the first one. I’m fine with decisions coming out later this year up to the 23rd if admission officers will use that extra time to offer students who originally were going to be deferred acceptances because of extra spaces from withdrawn apps. That means more acceptances for everyone before christmas! it’s frustrating that acceptance rates and yield are factored into us news ranking because umich has become really careful with yield now and giving tons of deferrals early action to well qualified early action applicants to keep their yield up and acceptance rates low. it’s getting harder for us in state residents to get in because of the competition from out of state applicants and umich has shifted the focus from in state to out of state in recent years. us news ranking should be based off the quality of the school, not acceptance rates and yield.

Good luck everyone and hang in there! No matter how long it takes, I hope all of us will receive positive news this month and finally stop stressing! Maybe the longer wait this year will mean more acceptances!

Yup. No point in stressing about this too much.

Notre Dame just handed out REA today. Let’s see who bails on UMich now. :-B

@Seacoast I never thought of that. There seems to be a lot of overlap. Hmmmmmm

More than we know! #-o

Last week on Wednesday or so @bunny101
