Bay City Central, by Saginaw. @Eeeee127
Has anyone heard any news whether or not it will be this Friday or the next? I’m soooo anxious!!!
@nasoth, no only around 3300 of those 10,880 kids ended up going, but they still took an acceptance that a very qualified in state student could have gotten. @bells2017 yeah i feel like many of the umich instate applicants/acceptances are from the greater detroit/ann arbor area. I used to live in Midland, so I wonder what acceptances are like there.
@Eeeee127 You seem very frustrated about OOS applicants, who help fund UMich (and also bring geographic diversity to make UM a richer educational experience). Michigan taxpayers aren’t willing to fund their schools like they used to, so you will continue to see a decrease in in-state preference proportional to declining state allocation. As a proud UMich alum (grad) and one-time Michigan taxpayer (8 years), I think UMich does what it can to procure the resources it needs to be a great university (whether it really can be considered a true state university anymore is debatable). The good news for you is that you have a much better chance of getting in and will pay a lot less.
@binky17 sorry if I seem frustrated, it’s probably the stress thats getting to me. I just don’t understand why michigan is receiving less funding from the state than other public schools like uc, unc chapel hill, and uva. maybe it’s because of the declining economy? Anyway though, I think it’s great that you can meet people from so many different states and countries and that michigan is gaining a national and international reputation. i wish everyone the best of luck and no matter where you end up, you will do great
@binky17 I don’t think he/she is frustrated, and even if they were the would have a point. Michigan is a flagship state school, one of it’s priorities should be to educate in state kids. 50/50 split is too high if you ask me. If an in state kid is as qualified or more qualified than an out of state kid, the in state kid should get in.
Does anyone know if the decisions for EA are coming out this Friday (16th) or next? I have heard theories about each date. I just want to be sure.
exactly @nasoth, I’m happy with the geographical diversity of umich but not when a less qualified out of state applicant gets in over a more qualified in state applicant who has lived in michigan their whole life and prepared for this moment since they were a little kid. in 2010 i think, the director of umich admission said their priority is to educate the in state students and they would keep it at 66% in state but now it’s only 50% in state.
@Eeeee127 well, I hope you get in! Fingers crossed.
Umich is so competitive that ,for me, it seems like a private school lol
Are the decisions coming out this friday or next? Could someone please answer haha
@nasoth I agree! I strongly believe in public education and I think the residents of a state should pay more tax for higher education. The state school system should be primarily for that state’s investment in its students. Sadly, that is not how it is anymore. And I definitely agree with your point about qualification, but stats alone cannot determine who is more qualified.
@binky17 my stats aren’t crazy high but I hope Michigan sees past that! Im not sure how serious they are about hollisitic admisisons.
@skyflower17 no one really knows. We’re all hoping it’s this Friday but it could be next Friday. Past years show that this Friday makes sense but you never know.
@nasoth i hope so too! How do you feel about your essays? I think if you conveyed your passion, that will help. Fingers crossed.
Are there any legacy relatives out there who received an email today congratulating us on our relative’s EA application to the U of M? It is generic and has a link to FAQ’s about the admission process, but I find the timing to be a little strange. It is probably just coincidental but I am wondering if all legacy families receive this.
Also, good luck to everyone during this stressful time. It looks like ( from what I have read from other threads including last year) that only 10-15 % of EA decisions are "accept, " and most of the rest are deferrals.
did anyone else major on the Wolverine access portal say undeclared. I put in something on the common app, i dont remember what it was though. I wrote my essay specifically on the neuroscience major, and professors/programs and research within it. Would this affect me in anyway?
Yes @uofm83 we got that. I think it’s a way for them to acknowledge their alum base. A courtesy before the boom drops.
@bells2017 Mine shows the same and I submitted my app under microbiology. Admissions said it will remain undeclared until you are admitted and change it accordingly.
@uofm83 damn. 10-15% based on what people on the thread said? Hopefully the real number is higher.
