UMichigan or HKU?

If you compare the pay from a Mich Grad and a HKU Grad directly in their respective currency, surely the Mich grad’s earning would be greater, obviously the living standard in the US in much higher and hence the pay too.

However, as you said Derek, it isn’t exactly THAT appropriate to generalise that all HKUers can’t speak English, surely there would be some people who can’t do so, but I’m definitely sure a proportion would be able to do so without any issues.

@sc-henri- Would you mind sharing some of your stats? One of my friends wants to get into the architecture program in HKU, altho that wont be for 2 years. =)

I am from Taiwan, but I have friends in MANY countries including the US and HK. I would say, in general, HK unis’ graduates will be workers, but top US unis’ graduates could be innovaters. HK unis cannot give you an education that gives you “critical thinking”.(Again, it’s just based on my experience. eg, my friends in Harvard, Berkeley, CUHK, Beijin U, etc.)

Peers is very important imo. But China is a huge market, and you probably can get to know China more while in HK( HKers and Chinese are far different ppl though). According to Business Week, there’s a trend in Aisa to go to Chinese unis. The benefits are that many ppl find their business partners while in college and start a new business right after graduation. But again, this is China, and Chinese are very different from HKers.

All in all, if I were you and I could afford UMich, I will go to UMich.

Was this statement made with “critical thinking”? Well, let’s look further:

Are your friends in Harvard/Berkeley international students from Taiwan or Asia? If so, these are some of the best of the best students from Asia. Not too mention they may be weathy with connections. When I have two cohorts from HK, of course the grads that are educated in top US universities are gonna look better than the grads that go to HK universities on average. Because you know what? You have to be the best of the best (say top 5%) to get into top US colleges while you need to be the top 1/3 or 1/4 to be in HK universities. Those that go to the top US colleges are more qualified on average to begin with and BEFORE they even step out of HK

Granted, US colleges in general are more liberal-arts based and may be more well-rounded but you are exaggerating the difference. You seriously think HK can be the #3/#4 financial center in the world with virtually no natural resources if it’s just run by bunch of robots?

is it just me or does that post sound kinda criticizing? :S

I think sometimes local people tend to think their own local university is not good enough.
Everyone’s heart is about going abroad. Not sure about others but to me yes. So, it is understandable if someone from hk will want to go abroad because all his life he was at hk , you get me?

No comment about which is better. Total utter nonsense post to even compare. Ask yourself which kind of life you want to live thats all with financial consideration as both are top notch. (Again I understand if you are a HKer and you lived like 20 years at HK already that is why you disagree)

The problem with english isn’t a large problem. I bet not all University of Tokyo students can converse so damn well in english either? Its not their native language.

PS : I will put Uni of Tokyo infront of MichiganU anytime

@yingtinglin: “I am from Taiwan, but I have friends in MANY countries including the US and HK. I would say, in general, HK unis’ graduates will be workers, but top US unis’ graduates could be innovaters.”
Only HKU, CUHK and HKUST are internationally famous. Of course the rest of the schools in HK wont be as good as top schools in US.

“The benefits are that many ppl find their business partners while in college and start a new business right after graduation. But again, this is China, and Chinese are very different from HKers.”
What do you mean by that? Hong Kong people are different from Chinese!!? What are you talking about? You know most of them know mandarin? Also, are you saying that in HK it’s harder to start a new business?

Yeah I agree, only HKU CUHK and HKUST are by far really “internationally known” in some sense. Forget the rest, like seriously. (presuming you have a UMichigan offer to choose from)

That’s absolutely not true. The living standard for an upper middle class family is quite a bit higher in Hong Kong; housing is more expensive, ditto for transportation, utilities, eating out, raising a kid, etc. If you come to work in HK without an expat package, be sure to ask for more money.

Family went to UMich and I already got in HKU, and gotta say HKU is better.

how so? social life at HKU seems very tough so is academics.

Hi: Both U Michigan and Hong Kong U are very good. If you plan to work in US, no doubt Michigan. If you plan to work in Hong Kong, no doubt HKU.

i’d say no doubt UMich if you wanna work in HK too lol
you wouldnt know how incompetent HKU students are lol

ps i am from HK and got into both umich and HKU lol
