I was accepted into Michigan COE applying as a mechanical engineering major. I mainly want to go there because I'm really interested in cars and I know of all the awesome opportunities that Michigan can give to me not to mention the prestige of Michigan Engineering. I really do love the thought of being able to go to Michigan just because it seems like the quintessential college experience. However, I'm out of state and they haven't given me a penny :[ Making it pretty expensive...

My other main choice would be go to UArizona where I'm getting full scholarship as an in-state (plus an iTouch!)
One thing I'm concerned about is that I really want to go to a good grad school for ME (Stanford, Berkeley...didn't get in undergrad) so I'm wondering maybe it would be better to the easier path for UA(easier meaning people prob won't be half as competitive as Michigan) be able to do well and then go to grad school. Or will going to Michigan really put me at an upper hand, regardless of the massive debt?

Btw, I visited Michigan and I wasn't a huge fan of the campus but I did enjoy and could definitely see myself going there. I haven't visited UA but I'm an AZ native and I'm cold at 70 degrees so it has that going for it.

What would you do in my situation?! I am completely unable to make up my mind

Go to Michigan. If you want to build cars, it would be very valuable to have all to big automakers within a few hours drive. The internships and the recruitment Michigan can get you would be amazing. Plus, Michigan also has a program where you can major in mechanical engineering for undergrad and then continue on to get your masters in automotive engineering. Here are some links:

Provided you do well of course. But then again, if money is a problem, you should go to Arizona. Arizona State is the big party school right? Not University of Arizona? Can’t remember off the top of my head.

Plus, if you don’t get into Stanford, Berkeley, or MIT, you will always have Michigan. Many would argue that Michigan is comparable to them, I won’t touch that though.

woeyzoe, UA for free vs Michigan at full price is a $200,000 difference. That’s HUGE! Of course, if your parents are well off, the investment is worth it, but if your parents must sacrifice a good deal and/or you must take out a large loan (over $30,000 in total), it simply isn’t worth it.

For Mechanical Engineering, it isn’t debatable, it is fact. Michigan is always ranked between #2 and #5 in Mechanical Engineering.
