UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

To those who are accepting their offer of admission to UMKC, I got the book list from the UMKC Bookstore website (https://www.umkcbookstore.com/) which I checked in the fall semester and now in the spring. So you can find great book deals online by entering the ISBN number in Amazon or another online bookseller.

Hey guys, so congrats to everyone who got an acceptance to UMKC’s BA/MD program!! I created a Dropbox for our class (UMKC Med Class of 2021) for textbooks that we need. It will save us a lot of cash especially since a lot of the textbooks we won’t need after the class is over – Gen Chem, Gen Bio, Orgo Chem, etc. and we can just print on campus.

So for those people who don’t know what a Dropbox is, it is a file hosting service website where you can store all your files and access them from anywhere you have Internet without carrying a flash or external hard drive. I’ve created a Dropbox for our class with the textbooks that we use, but I only get 2 GB free initially. But if I refer people to create a Dropbox account (which is also free for you to sign up, I swear), and you create a Dropbox account, 500 MB of space is automatically added to the UMKC Med 2021 Dropbox up to a limit of 16 GB of space. So if you guys don’t mind, PM message me with your email and I can send you a referral link to create a Dropbox for yourself, after which 500 MB will be added, and then I can send you a link to the class dropbox and you can start downloading them. Hopefully this will work out well and you can download all the books and have them saved.

You can also send your email to my username at gmail. Let me know if you have any problems doing this so I can give you access.

You guys, @PinkPrincess2014 and @UMKCMed2021 are really on top of things!!! Having softcopies of the textbooks will really save you guys a respectable amount of money which you can spend on something much more useful. A lot of your undergrad textbooks you will not even be cracking open again once the class is over.

Congrats @PinkPrincess2014‌ !
@ang331‌ I have not officially accepted it yet, but I will probably do so around next week, to make sure this is my final decision.

@UMKCMed2021‌
My daughter already has a Dropbox account. Will that work or will she have to make a new account? Also, she hasn’t accepted the offer yet, but will accept it next week.

@15match, if she already has a Dropbox, it won’t add 500 MB to the UMKC Med 2021 class dropbox. She would have to make a new account from a referral link I send her, which would then add 500 MB to both of our accounts. https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/200.

Right now it’s a measly 2 GB, so the more people who sign up after clicking my referral link, the more books I can add. Either send her email to my Message box here on CC or shoot me an email which is my username at gmail, and I can send the link to access it, since she already has one. Thanks for your help @15match!

my D got accepted.

my D also got accepted, when will they start? Aug / Sep?

@btypic, they start August 24th: http://www.umkc.edu/registrar/acal.asp#/?i=3

Does anyone know at UMKC whether there are other undergraduate options available other than Biology, Chemistry, Liberal Arts (Medicine/Biology, Medicine/Chemistry, Medicine/Liberal Arts)? http://www.umkc.edu/majormaps/

Medicine/Biology: http://www.umkc.edu/majormaps/maps/2014-2015/SOM_BA_MD_Bio_2014_2015.pdf

Medicine/Chemistry: http://www.umkc.edu/majormaps/maps/2014-2015/SOM_BA_MD_Chem_2014_2015.pdf

Medicine/Liberal Arts: http://www.umkc.edu/majormaps/maps/2014-2015/SOM_BLA_MD_2014_2015.pdf

I saw here: http://catalog.umkc.edu/colleges-schools/medicine/requirements-for-graduation-ba-md-combined-program/ that there are others available: “The most common baccalaureate degrees are in liberal arts, biology, chemistry, communication studies, philosophy, psychology and sociology,” but I can’t remember if they had mentioned these as options for incoming students.

Congrats to everyone that got in once again! Just wanted to post that there is a Facebook group called “UMKC school of medicine: class of 2021” so that we can meet each other on a social level for rooming. Also does anyone know how rooming works, do all BA/MD students room in one area?

@PinkPrincess2014, unless things have drastically changed, those other degrees: Psychology, Communication Studies, Sociology, etc. should still be available to BA/MD students as some people, even in my class, did those degrees. You do have to come in with the appropriate amount of credit though to make it work, especially since you guys can no longer take undergrad classes in the second semester of Year 2 and are now capped in the total number of hours you can take each semester.

One of my classmates did Psychology (she took AP Psychology in high school which spurred her interest), She ended up actually going into the field of Psychiatry, then did a fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and now works in private practice.

It would be a shame if the only options available to you were Biology, Chemistry, and Liberal Arts, but you should check with your ETC (Education Team Coordinator): http://med.umkc.edu/sa/staff/, to see exactly how it is now.

Does anyone know the orientation dates?

@vishalmittal‌

They randomly assign you a roommate if you don’t have a preference. Which is what most people end up doing. Rarely do people know each other to room together.

It used to be that you would all be on the same floor. But thanks to my class and the one below us, we were all so obnoxious together that they had to separate us. Which sucks because that was literally the best time of med school. Anyways now you are all in the same buliding but scattered over all the floors.

Later in the summer after you accept and stuff you will be able to see your room assignment and roommate you were assigned on pathway.

I would say you should do random because then it’s more fun. But I do know that your roommate and most likely you suite mates will def be from the program. Unless things have changed in the last 4 years or so.

@vishalmittal, to add to what @bluegrn6 said, I think it has always been to where you are assigned roommates usually with another BA/MD student (unless you specifically ask differently) at the (relatively) new dorms on Oak Street http://www.umkc.edu/housing/halls_and_rates/oak_street_hall.asp, (I missed it by 1 year, darn it!) It makes sense when you need to study for the same classes, getting up for Docent, etc. and eventually when you want to move out to apartments, and might need a roommate after Year 1 Spring.

Not that there aren’t other great people who are regular UMKC undergrads you could room with as well, but it can be a little more risk.

Thought this was kind of cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IwtnLHD5cQ; Much better dorms than we had.

@Bluegrn6, nice to see nothing has changed in terms of overall personality. First year in the dorms was one of our most fun years. lol!

@Blugrn6, I noticed in the degree plan that Pharmacology is taught over a 2 month time period either June-July or October-November of Year 4. Do you really think that you learned all the Pharmacology you needed to know for clinics and for Step 1 over 2 months?? Seems really compressed.

I think it’s really weird that you guys are put into Internal Medicine clinics as Year 3s without having any of the prerequisite basic science courses beforehand to build off of. How did you and/or your classmates feel about this aspect of the program? Are there people who by the end of the program end up really hating Docent Rotation and Internal Medicine clinics just because you do 6 months of Internal Medicine and 4 years of Internal Medicine clinic?

Oh, and my other question that you might have missed: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18290781/#Comment_18290781

congrats to everyone who got in and are thinking of attending! I got into the program too and was wondering how many people usually dorm together in one room?

@sar793, See here: http://www.umkc.edu/housing/halls_and_rates/rates.asp.

Just got accepted to the program! Committed yesterday as well!
