I’m thinking about going into Sociology and I honestly can’t decide which school would be better for me.
I got into the CLA Honors program at the U (Twin Cities) and I took college courses during high school so I’m going to graduate with most of my general ed requirements already finished and I’d have the opportunity to take the Honors courses the U offers.
But then I also got into Berkeley (CL&S) and from what I’ve heard they’re one of the best schools for Sociology. I had been planning on moving out to California after graduation anyways (had I gone to the U) so does it make more sense just to go out there now for my undergrad?
What do you all think would be a better choice? I honestly have no idea, any thoughts and comments would be SUPER appreciated!
Also, if anyone knows whether or not University of Minnesota: Twin Cities credits transfer to Berkely please let me know it’d be super helpful!
My parents are paying for all my college; if I go to the U, I’ll graduate with zero debt, if I go to Berkeley, there’s like a 90% chance I’ll graduate with no debt (depending on whether my dad is laid off in the near future) and a slight possibility for minimal debt. Either way, my parents told me not to worry about the money. Berkeley would be full tuition and at the U I got some scholarships so it’d be somewhere between 15 to 20 grand a year~
While you say effectively costs are not a concern, many if not most in Sociology go on to grad school. You are talking about $140k more for the Berkeley undergrad degree. I would advise MN and apply those saved $ to grad school. Now if your family is quite wealthy and costs absolutely won’t matter for undergrad or grad, then Berkeley may be somewhat more rewarding.
For undergrad I’d say Minnesota. Berkeley’s reputation is built on its graduate programs and research. At an undergraduate level, Berkeley’s not that different from Big 10 schools.
