Universities don’t release merit aid based on individual majors/schools/colleges. For the overall university, here are the stats for the Class of 2023:

966 of 6259 students (15.4%) were offered an average of $6,116 per year in merit aid.
2601 of 6269 students (41.5%) were offered an average of $12,676 per year in need-based scholarships or grants.

My son got National Scholarship. UMN site talks about lots other scholarship information including presidential scholarship and college specific scholarships. Any ideas about those scholarships ? We are OOS.

Scholarships can’t be chanced, especially for public schools. You have a better chance than most with a National Merit but most scholarships are typically reserved for in state since its a public school.

My son got a big fat nothing. The only thing in his favor is reciprocity. He’s still paying significantly more than an in-state student since he doesn’t qualify for the Minnesota grants. He was admitted back in September to CLA and has great stats/EC’s. Didn’t get scholarships or Honors.
He’s been applying for multiple private/outside scholarships each day. We are hoping a couple of those come through to lessen the blow. Right now we are looking at a Parent Plus or private loan of 20k and 2nd jobs to pay it off within a year (we hope). We aren’t applying for the loan until he finds out if he got any scholarships.

What my son got is not the National Merit scholarship. They call it National Scholarship at UMN, looks like meant for OOS students only.

If your son already got that scholarship why are you on here asking to see what else he could get? If that’s his scholarship, you should be proud since it’s one of very few that they give. He’s likely not going to get anything else merit-based.

On the UMN website it mentions CLA freshman usually get 1000-7000 in CLA scholarships. Saying that getting the OOS national Scholarship is not guaranteed. The top you can get is $15,000. Does that mean you can’t get both? I don’t know

It seems UMINN does not give a ton of merit aid out based on what I have read on the boards, I think they said they would let kids know by the end of the month what their merit aid would be, my son was admitted into Carlson but we have only seen the FA award which was just a federal loan so really no aid. We are OOS so unless there is some merit I do not see paying about 55k for Carlson as an option for us.

@JV2020, based on what your saying I think he has all he will get, they did give him merit aid correct? if so I doubt they would award anything else on top of that but I could be wrong.

@NJdad07090, That 's what it looks like.
Some college sites clearly say that scholarships can be combined/not combined with other scholarships offered by the university. Since UMN site about scholarships is not clear enough in this aspect, I was hopeful of getting more - mainly because we are OOS.

just found we got $5000 national scholarship, which makes us lean to UMTC. hope we can get something from UWmadison as well. the tution fee in UCSD is little bit insane.

Just checked my financial aid portal - I got the $10,000 national scholarship. However, I will be attending Ohio State since I got more money there.
