Unable to give up music...

I'm picking up on the lack of ambition angle, as well. It sounds as though music is a love for the OP, not so much a driving passion. So you might want to look beyond music as an academic course, and see what schools offer attractive ensemble (extracurricular) performance opportunities.
I'll toss Florida State University and Indiana University into the mix.

Many thanks to everyone, I'm reading lots of helpful stuff in here!

Tufts in MA is good for engineering and has a great music dept.

Look into Harvey Mudd. (No, seriously!) As it is technically a liberal arts college, each student there actually has to concentrate in a liberal arts field in order to fulfill their graduation requirements. My brother just graduated from HMC with a BS in engineering and a concentration in vocal performance through Scripps' music department.

Rochester and Case Western are both worth a look.

The University of Michigan, Northwestern, and Rice might offer what you're looking for.
