UNC-Chapel--averaging SAT CR & Wrt scores?

Heard a rumor that UNC-chapel Hill maybe AVERAGING SAT CR & Writing scores moving forward...does anyone have any knowledge about this???? TXS!

What do you mean by averaging the scores? Like, instead of superscoring, they’d just take all of the CR scores you submitted and average them?

Not going to happen, imo. Superscoring is good for the school and the student. It gives students the best chance to show how well they did on the SAT, and it makes the school look more selective and boosts the stats for its students.

Only some Ivies require that you submit all of your SAT scores, and I sincerely doubt that UNC will change its policy.

Thanks for the reply—No, what I mean is after you superscore…they take, for instance, your highest CR score of 640 and your highest writing score of 720 and average THOSE two scores to come up with ONE score for those two sections combined.

…that doesn’t make any sense. I don’t think so.

That’s inane and pointless.

maybe its a new trend?

No.

10char

Thanks ArtemisDea–whats “10char” mean?

^You need around 10 characters to make a post on a thread, so “10char” is just a way to meet that requirement

SAT Writing isn’t being used by many admissions offices because it has no track-record. The first class to take it just graduated, and you need at least 5 years of students to figure out any correlation to GPA, graduation rates, etc.

UNC would not average the two.

This could be true. When my son was accepted to UNC a few years back, we were told they would be using the Writing score (many other schools said they would not use it). Recently my younger daughter and I attended a college info session and the Duke rep said something similar. My daughter specifically asked if Duke would be using the Writing score (as that is her lowest area) and Duke said they would be combining WR with CR (her highest area). I wasn’t listening closely so I’m not sure if she said they were averaging the two or if one section would count more than the other. Seems like they were saying Math would count 50% and the CR/W would count 50%. Perhaps this is a way both schools are planning to “consider” the writing section without giving it full weight.

edit: nevermind.

^The not heavily weighted should be emphasized. The whole point of the SAT is not only to compare students to each other, but compare the potential for success with past classes. This is tough to do with SAT Writing as it stands now, and it will take a few years before it starts getting weighted even close to the level the CR/M are right now.

Since they had the first graduating class I think most colleges will start putting slightly more weight on it, but for the most part I think it will stay one of those “It can’t really help you that much, but if you bomb it, it can hurt you” parts of the application for 5 or so more years.
