UNC Chapel Hill chances? Please read!

I know these threads are annoying, but I am looking for someone to help reassure me and somewhat give me confidence in my application for UNC Chapel Hill. Preferably someone attending the school currently, was accepted, or went to UNC Chapel Hill (even better if you are/were an out of state student.) Thanks in advance.

Grade- Rising Senior, Graduating Class of 2014

Sex- Female

Out of State Student- Florida (I've heard they have an applications officer in my city (Tampa), and that this is a "very popular" city for UNC Chapel Hill to select from, in Florida.)

GPA (Un-weighted)-3.7173 (Shooting for all A's first semester of senior year, dropped the ball in math junior year-oops..)

GPA (Weighted)- 5.3173 (This is without 7 AP credits added in, unsure of those scores yet!, and without dual enrollment at our community college.)

Sport- Kickboxing/Muay Thai

Job- Color Me Mine employee

Volunteering- Humane Society/Hospital/Homeless Shelter

Intended college major- Premedicine

Honors Classes- ALL Honors/Gifted classes, unless otherwise in an AP class.

AP Classes- AP World History, AP US History, AP Psychology, AP Language & Composition, AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Calculus AB, AP European History, AP Chemistry, AP French Language, AP Literature. Total= (11) Unfortunately, did not pass AP US/H and AP PSYCH, both teachers for the respective classes were not very good teachers, both written up to CollegeBoard, one has been fired.

Class Rank- Out of 563 students, I have ranked in the top 25% of my class, this is WITHOUT the credit of my first semester of senior year, my dual enrollment with our community college, and 7 AP Class credits added in, predicted class rank is in the top 10%.

ACT Score- So far, I have only taken the ACT once. I did not study whatsoever going into it, and I took it early my junior year, so I had a lot more to learn coming into my senior year, am getting ready to take it again in September.
English: 27
Mathematics: 26
Reading: 30
Science: 24
Combined English/Writing: 27, (9)
Composite Score: 27

SAT Score- The same applies to my SAT score, took it early in my junior year, did not study whatsoever. Taking the SAT again in early October.
Verbal/Critical Reading: 600
Mathematics: 620
Writing: 570 (9)
Total: 1790

Clubs- French Honors Society (President), Beta Honors Society, National Honors Society, English Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Social Studies Honors Society.

Activities- I am a "Writing Tutor" at my high school. This is similar to the tutors in many colleges; to be a writing tutor, you had to pass the AP Lang test, (I received a 5), submit multiple essays, and read/take an exam on a lengthy handwritten book by our English Department President. The application was reviewed by all of the English teachers, and once I was selected, I was placed in a homeroom specifically for the writing tutors (there are only 20 of us all together), and three times a week I go to the Writing Center at my school and assist multiple students with their writing skills. I receive volunteer hours, and forfeit my study hall class to do this. Also, during the "homeroom period" the English Department President drills us on our English and grammar skills. I am considered part of the leadership of my school. I am also very passionate about being a writing tutor.

*I realize my SAT/ACT scores are JUST in the average range for UNC Chapel Hill. I know this is good, but I can do better. I am an excellent essay writer, although I did not show that in my SAT/ACT, and I feel I can beautifully write my essay for the Common App. I guess what I am looking for is for someone, with some knowledge about UNC Chapel Hill, to tell me if I sound like an outstanding candidate, as I know it is hard to be accepted as an out of state student. UNC Chapel Hill is my first choice, and it is safe to say I am completely enamored with this school. I LOVE it. Especially for premed, and possibly my doctorate. I am also considering University of Virginia, Georgetown, and Duke (although Duke is quite a stretch, but one never really knows, haha.) Everything I do, I do with passion. I love my clubs/activities/sport/job/volunteering opportunities. I do them not for colleges, but for myself. :)

** I WILL BE APPLYING FOR EARLY ACTION **

Thank you for your time & opinions.

UNC is very difficult to get into fit OOS students,

That’s it? I am already aware it is difficult…

UNC is very difficult to get into for OOS students- 15% acceptance rate. My son is from Florida and was accepted this spring (decided to go to WUSTL). Your biggest weakness are the test scores. You may know that UNC superscores the ACT, so you may want to compute your superscored ACT if you’ve taken the test multiple times. SAT score is low too. But they do look past test scores. If you can wow them with your essays, you may have a better chance.

Thank you! What were your son’s test scores, if I may ask? I have both my future SAT/ACT scores being sent immediately to Chapel Hill, from there they can superscore and I can retake the tests as needed. My essays are definitely one of my strongest abilities, especially when it’s something I heavily desire.

One of my siblings got rejected EA with a 32 ACT OOS. Are you sure 27 is average, even for OOS? However was admitted to other top schools of higher ranking.

Highest ACT composite was 30, superscored ACT 32.

He got into UNC, but salutatorian didn’t (despite higher GPA and ACT). What he had were some very unique EC due to a rare health condition and an essay that had his admission officer send him a personal note (essay was about being stranded on a desert island with a basketball named Williams and how he was almost rescued by a ship that turned out to be a Blue Devil ship with Coach K on it- son declined to be rescued when Williams told him not to trust Coach K.

I did a private college tour back in early June, and I asked the head admissions officer if the mid-range scores were the same for in-state and out-of-state students, and he said yes… Did your sibling have outstanding grades that reflected the ACT score? Also, how were their writing abilities and activities? The admissions officer said that those were very important, and you needed a somewhat nice “equality” with your grades, test scores, and activities, and that one does not outweigh the other…

So it was the essay, the EC, and the wonderful scores that got him in! Your son sounds like a very creative person, and the essay sounds awesome. I’m hoping my final ACT score will be a 30, like your son’s, hopefully superscored the same. It looks like the admissions officer told me the truth when he said they pay attention to scores, activities, and essays, which makes me feel TONS better. Thank you so much for your replies, they have been very helpful. :)

I think that you need to have better scores as an OOS student- I don’t know if that info is published, but it would seem intuitive at a school that is pretty selective. They take 82% in state (by law), so when you look at their numbers, they accept less than 1000 OOS a year. And remember that some of these students may be athletic recruits.

Sons GPA was 3.83- his writing ability was pretty strong. As for his LOR, one of them was from a Cardiologist at Harvard Medical School.

Right now my number one goal is boosting the test scores… My tutor believes I can raise the SAT by 300 points and receive at least a 30 on the ACT at the rate I am going, especially since I took them very early my junior year. I’m planning on having an accredited College Board English teacher write one of my recommendations and then have my tutor (a physicist, pharmacologist, and college professor of multiple schools) write the second one. Although, it’s hard to beat a LOR from a Cardiologist at Harvard. Wow.

Best of luck to you- I know it’s cliche, but you will eventually find the school that is right for you.

I am an international student. I don’t think that you will get accepted, sorry.

I see that you train in MT, though! That’s great; I do as well!!

^Every time I’ve seen someone say “I don’t think you’re going to get accepted” on a thread here on CC, they get accepted. Lol. I will be applying in a year from now, and will have identical gpa stats to yours. Bring those test scores up.

Thank you!! And I have! Received my end of junior year scores… finally… 33 on the ACT, 2010 on the SAT :)

I think with your stats and your new test scores, you are pretty competitive but UNC out of state is extremely difficult to get into so its hard to tell. Hope things work out in your favor though!

Hi, I applied for UNC-CH regular decision because I wanted to take that first semester and improve my grades. Can anyone tell me my chances of getting into UNC-CH? And I am in state

ACT Score: 34 Composite
SAT Subject Test: 740 in Chemistry and 800 in Math
GPA: there is a GPA calculation issue with wake county… its not offocial… but my guidance counselor calculated it to be a 4.14. But, on my transcript, I had a 3.95 weigted GPA
Teacher Recs: I am pretty sure they will be above average or really good. I also had a recommendation from a UNC professor who I interned with over summer. Does that help at all?
ECs: I had average to above average ECs on my resume and common app
Essays: I am pretty sure I had decent essays…
Reason why my GPA is so low: my GPA does not reflect my intellect. In 10th grade, I received horrible grades due to personal problems (family). But, I rebounded in 11th grade getting all B’s and 1A. Then in 12th grade 1st semester, I received All A’s and one B. So, I have been on an upward trend. Does UNC-CH take this into account at all?
Can anybody guess my chance of getting in? I applied to GA Tech Engineering school and got waitlisted… I also got waitlisted from NorthEastern… the surprising thing is that I got denied from NC State.

Your scores seem substantial for UNC Chapel Hill… Try and write stellar essays to stand yourself out…
Good luck!!
