UNC Chapel Hill EA or RD?

I am currently a high school senior in New Jersey. My credentials aside, which admissions option offers me the best chance of getting into UNC Chapel Hill from out of state. Does early action offer any distinct advantage over regular decision? I am not worried about when I get my decision letter, but I want to provide myself with the best opportunity to get in from out of state.

In many schools, I've read that the EA applicant pool is more competitive than that of the regular decision.

Reply with your thoughts and opinions.

The best scholarship opportunities (Morehead-Cain and Robertson) are exclusive to the EA deadline in two weeks. That’s really all I can say on the matter.

The advantage of EA is that if you get in and the net cost is ok, the school becomes a safety, and you can drop applications to any schools less desirable than it. If you get rejected outright, that might be a clue to re-evaluate your application list and perhaps consider whether you have been overestimating your chances at various schools.

However, you may just get deferred to the regular round.

Except in the case of UNC, you don’t get to hear from EA until late in January way past the RD deadline for most colleges.
