UNC-Chapel Hill vs UCLA

Does it makes sense to have both on a wish list? They seem to have much in common to me with regard to balance of fun and academic caliber of students, but while the odds are very slightly better for my d at our states "flagship", we are also talking about UNC- Chapel Hill because of the higher population of Black students ( sorry, it matters to me ), and it's a little bit smaller. I know it may not be "worth it" to pay OOS tuition, but OOS at UNC-Chapel Hill is still cheaper than a private without aid ( and we are not expecting any).We have family there, and trying a more southern culture may be an intersting change from my d's suburban California one. The application is a little challenging after already sending out 12 others, so I hesitate to bring it up again ( we told her we didn't want to pay OOS tuition for a public school) if it's unlikely to make a lot of sense. BTW, she is a relatively high achieving URM from a small Chrisitan School she has attended since she was 4 1/2.

I think it makes perfect sense to have both on the wishlist shrinkrap! OOS at Carolina IS very reasonable and diversity is just another one of those great things about the school.

My d also wanted a little bit of a change from what she has always known living in the suburbs of a huge city. UNC is a wee bit Southern, wee bit East Coast, with the big athletic conference feel of our flagship (UT-Austin) and the prestigious Ivy feel of a private school. And I'm always amazed at the great proximity North Carolina has to all things good....in less than a day's drive, you can be at the beach or the mountains or even in Washington DC.

I think it would be worth it to add that lucky 13th application to the pile.

Thank you. It may be the 13th of 16. Sigh.

Do it, by all means! If she's interested seriously in any school, have her apply to them. The few days of relief during this season is not worth the regret of never knowing.

shrinkrap: I'm from San Diego, and I have UNC higher on my list than UCLA; I think UNC has a tighter community feeling, the diversity is great (though somewhat self-segregated), and the campus is gorgeous. Plus, like you said, I want a change from SoCal!

Thanks, all! vc08, have you compared the admit rates at UCLA vs OOS for UNC? Roughly, it seems about the same but I'll have to look closer.

yeah, UCLA admits around 24%, and I'm guessing UNC admits about the same % OOS as well. Only 18% of the frosh class at UNC is OOS, but you have to figure they admitted more, bc many students who get in there OOS will have chosen other elite schools. I applied EA so i should be getting a decision soon (though i'll honestly be shocked if i get in), so i'll let you know how it goes. Also, has your D looked at Michigan? I was recently admitted there; they have a very diverse student body, and minority groups are well-represented and very involved in campus activities, from what i hear. might want to check it out. good luck!

Michigan sounds good....but cold, and that's from a N. Cal resident who used to live on the East Coast. Plus, we have no familt there, and I kinda like the southern vibe more than the ....would that be midwest, great lakes...vibe? Of course it's my D, not me, that has to like it.She was born in LA. How does the weather strike YOU?

Admit rate for oos applicants fluctuates between 15-20%. Usually hangs in the 18% range.

Thank you! UC Notes says UCLA is 23.6 % for Cal residents.

weather: freezing, bone-chilling, Patagonia Tundra-like. But there's no place I'd rather freeze my butt off than Ann Arbor, MI!

i live here and it is not that bad just bundle up, global warming is truly real here this is our fiirst snow storm of the season so thats cool, its a hate/love relationship with the weather, however michigan is one of the most beautiful states in the country!

jenny, you know i'm gonna freeze my butt off...dont try to hide it....^_^
