UNC only has biomedical engineering and it’s a joint program with NC State. Students who want engineering ( other than biomedical) do not apply to UNC.
I also think she needs to consider the student body differences, if they exist. UNC will be predominantly in state students (but probably enough OOS that she won’t feel alone!), and UMich has a more geographically diverse student body (and a strong northeastern presence). Both have great college towns…but different weather.
It does sound like academically UMich might be the stronger choice based on her intended majors.
I think if she wants engineering then Michigan is the clear choice. If she wants actuarial science then some investigation is warranted.
UNC will have a greater instate presence with the OOS students (25% including transfers) coming from all over. Michigan does have a much larger northeast presence.
Umich is much more geographically diverse with students from all 50 states and 50% out of state while unc is only 18% out of state. Overall umich is better academically and in geographic diversity.
If you include transfer students then UNC is 25% OOS. Without transfer students it is 18%. Michigan has greater geographic diversity- with a very large northeast presence.
As far as academics, @Sparty82 should check the programs of interest.
UNC will send an email and post directions on their blog the day before.
Umich first year students class of 2020 without transfers is 50% compared to unc first year class with only 18% out of state
@Eeeee127 yes that is correct, with most OOS students at Michigan coming from NY and California. The NY population at UNC is much smaller.
No the top states are Illinois new Jersey california and new York and china but other states are fairly represented too @twogirls
Umich overall is more nationally and internationally renowned than unc. Umich alumni network is spread out all over the united states and the world
Ok I must have misread the class profile. You are right in that Michigan has greater geographic diversity- I never disputed that.
Michigan is a great school but was not right for my daughter.
that wasn’t taking legacy into consideration-- legacy had a whole different statistic
So being anxious about not getting an email about Excel Carolina, I went onto my common app to check where it discussed it. On Common App, it said that some programs may reach out to finalists for additional information. Although it said this will happen after admissions, maybe the email is what they’re referring to?
@BRANDONWM That has been the popular speculation across the board so far, but nobody really knows for sure.
I spoke with someone in admissions and they said that it was a random email primarily to out of state students and that it had no bearing on the admissions decision at all.
@tzglass I spoke to admissions about it too a while back and did not receive the same answer.
I was told decisions for Unc are today or tomorrow by someone working there… could be totally wrong and I would count on it just what I heard
@pleigh , but they have to send out the “how to look up your decision” email first, which if that’s true, that would be today, and then acceptance letter tomorrow but connect carolina will be down tomorrow. Then if they wait to send informational email tomorrow, people can’t check it because connect carolina will be closed…I feel it will be Monday now. with instructional email sent out Friday.
why is connect Carolina down tomorrow? @wywtcm21
