UNC Class of 2021 EA

Bradonwm your post made me reflect on what we’ve been doing to white males for a while now… Probably since you were born! Let’s hope they just look at you as a person and not the color of your skin or your gender… I think it’s time we treated everyone the exact same… I’m a female minority and I for one think we need the best people regardless of race or gender. Good luck to you! And whereever you end up, this process tends to put you in the right place. If UNC says no, just move on and find the right place for you… There are many places to get a great education and at the end of the day, your success or failure in life isn’t defined by this event! I promise!

@rosa0463 agree. It should be illegal for colleges to ask about race or nationality on the app. To go a step further, we shouldnt need to put our name on it either. We should just be an ID#. That’s how they do it in France.

8 hours in counting

Is it true that you need Ivy League stats to get into UNC OoS with no hooks?

Would it be 4pm, Eastern time?

@titan456 that’s what people have been saying

last year on the 2020 form everyone answered questions like “why do you want to go to UNC” to pass the time the day of expected admission decsions. Anyone wanna do that?

@Talentless I’m game… I’m so bored

@rosa0463 As a mom of a white male, I really appreciate your comment. My son was denied at UVA with 1520 SAT, 4.9 GPA & lots of ECs. He also wrote his best essay for UVA (IMO). But didn’t even get deferred. It was difficult to take but hoping for better outcome with UNC (even though we are prepared for the same result). But ultimately, it’s what you make of where you go to college that matters so much more than where you go. Good luck everyone!!

@DannyPanny That’s a great idea! That IS how it should be done.

That’s how they do it in Canada

Get rid of legacy, athlete preferences, along with uneven playing field across ethnic groups would be a great start for a truly merit based system. I understand the talk of holistic review and all that, but practically, how much a holistic look of everything could that be if there are 40,000 applications on the table and with 80 reviewers? Schools with such large application pools must have their own internal system to separate the piles based on whatever. I doubt every pile is treated equally. Obviously, for UNC, the competition for OOS spots is almost Ivy-League’ish. We are likely to see admission rate in that pile to go down below 15% this year. That begs the question for OOS applicants, UNC is a great school, but is it better than some of the more selective schools with better than 15% admission rate? Why not focus on those instead for OOS folks? Nobody is going place a totally blind system in place anytime soon… so why not change your application focus accordingly?

Before we work ourselves into a tizzy, it’s important (even in this day & age) to look at relevant facts. Here is the Class of 2020 profile:

You’ll notice 60% female. UNC does not strive for a 50/50 split like many schools, so females are not at a disadvantage as they are at other schools.

Also, 71% is white (which must include those of Hispanic ethnicity because the numbers add up to over 100). So, while there is some affirmative action, there are still plenty of spots available to whites.

Can’t wait for the crippling anxiety to give way to crippling depression

Affirmative action is necessary for so many reasons and I agree with @wstrav that there are still an abundant number of spots for whites, like my daughter who has been anything but disadvantaged in her upper-middle class suburban upbringing.

As for the hispanic number…you are probably right that some of them must be included in the whites category…if I remember correctly on common app when you declare hispanic there is one box that says “white hispanic” or something like that.

@CausticVS literally same

Hispanic or Latino is not a race classification, it is an ethnicity classification. Many Hispanics are white for racial classification purposes.

@LCP9876 The same thing happened to me and I couldn’t rationalize why I wasn’t at least deferred, I hope you guys know you aren’t alone in the confusion :slight_smile: Hopefully that just makes room for UNC as the right path to the future, everything happens for a reason! Best of luck tonight!

Colleges look at race to build diverse classes which sucks. It sucks being Asian more than white since its an overrepresented minority. Also recruited athletes can have lower stats brcause the college coach wants them. Even mit admissions criticizes completely merit based system because then there would be less diversity.

Did any out of state people on this thread apply to umich? I feel like umich is easier to get into out of state than unc and uva. It is 50% oos and oos acceptance rate is like 24% so you out of state people should apply to umich also which is easier to get into out of state than unc and uva and umich is a more internationally renowned school than unc and uva with all its programs ranked highly. only the weather and oos tuition are bad at umich but it’s a great school (basically a public ivy with its act range at 30-34 which is the same as cornell) its nursing engineering and business school are all ranked in the top 10 in the country along with many other programs
