UNC Class of 2021 EA

@LCP9876. The same thing happened to my D she was denied at William & Mary. Not even deferred with good stats, killer essays and she even got into s summer school program there last summer, lived in the dorms for 3 wks & fell in love with it. She cried for a month. She applied RD to UNC but as we are OOS her chances seem nill, harder than W&M which is why she chose Univ of Richmond for ED2. Being private it isn’t bound by in state rules & we have a bit more hope. VA requires 65% to be in state. NC only takes 18% OOS, I just couldn’t let her be set up for another rejection so even though she LOVED UNC when we visited, she chose UR for ED. We know 2/15, if not, then we applied quite a few RD. I am lurking here to see stats of those admitted, see if any similar to hers OOS got in. And all of you remind me of myself waiting for W&M, it was gut wrenching & I hope to be supportive. I hope your S gets admitted!! It’s so hard to see our kids just crushed!

@LCP9876 Same with my daughter, Best essays for UVA and hits all the marks on everything else. Rejected. But, to @Eeeee127 's point, we were all elated that she got into Michigan on December 21 so it’s all good no matter what happens. As to @BigflowerSusie it is now a probabilites game so OOS students have to apply to a bunch of excellent schools with low admit rates to increase the odds to be admitted to one. We loved Chapel Hill, which is why we added UNC to the list, and also liked UC Berkeley and UCLA.

@cloudysmom she can always transfer to William and Mary!

We have twin sons. Almost the exact opposite happened from @brooklynilene: got accepted at UVA OOS and deferred at UMich also OOS. Also waiting on UNC and Cal-Berkeley and Villanova. It seems like EA is becoming so prevalent that it will eventually either be the only method used or will go away altogether as it is placing a huge burden on admissions’ offices.

@Eeeee127 Yes, she will try next spring but she is still OOS so still up against same odds and W&M has a high retention rate so not many openings, ugh.

@cloudysmom and @amln1999 Thank you very much. Best of luck to you both!!!

@brooklynilene So sorry about the UVA decision but sounds like your daughter has a bunch of great options. Best of luck!!

“Talentless” (username) wanted to do what they did last year in the thread for 2020. Discuss why they want to go to UNC, or even maybe a twist, what made you want to apply. I think it would be a good way to pass the time and relieve anxiety. Though I see it’s mostly parents, maybe the same could still happen.

Lets start it, I want to go to UNC because of the killer academics, the community, and the fact that I fell in love with the people and the campus the first second I stepped on it. It was the only campus that I missed being on as soon as I went home. I love UNC so much and their approach to admissions and I hope to God I get in today at 4.

@Carolinaorbust - Good luck. However one should never get attached to one school (or anything else) that much. Life is unpredictable!

Honestly, a big thing that made me apply is that the student body is really attractive and the girl to guy ratio is high. Obviously, the good academics is what made me even look at the uni, but the student body is what differentiated the school.

I’m an OOS student with two parents who attended Unc, does that increase my chances?

@kbelle526 Legacy status is basically a tie breaker for OOS applicants.

I basically just applied because it was one the best public schools within seven or eight hours of me. It may have been inaccurate, but my understanding of transfer credit from dual enrollment is that most public schools transfer it well (except Michigan, for some reason) but that private schools, or at least most prestigious ones, don’t accept it if you also got high school credit. I’ve been doing legit college classes (not precalc or anything) at Ohio University for a couple years part time through dual enrollment, so I have like 30 transfer hours.

Hence, I didn’t apply to many prestigious private schools even though I felt like with my grades and test scores (35 ACT and, as of now, salutatorian in a class of 185) I ought to be applying to at least a couple colleges higher ranked on USNWR than Ohio State (I’m from Ohio). I applied to CWRU, but basically just because the app was free and easy. My tentative future plans changed in about August 2016, from doing linguistics to underclared STEM (maybe biochem), and UNC hadn’t shown up very high in national rankings for linguistics. In September I got some mail from UNC, and I knew I’d heard of it before so it probably was a pretty good school. I asked my dad about it, and he heavily encouraged me to apply. I looked up and few things about transfer credit, national rankings, etc, and I thought it would be a good place to apply, so I did.

As soon as marching band season was over (incidentally the first weekend after the election - I was pretty miserable) my dad and I drove down to Chapel Hill and I absolutely loved it. Academically UNC is so strong - definitely the best school I applied to, and everyone there is so nice! My dad and I tried to tour the dorm the tour guide told us to look at, but it was closed. However, a couple students let us in when we explained what we were doing, and one girl showed us her dorm. She must’ve been one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. UNC would be way more expensive for me than OSU, but if I’m accepted hopefully I’ll find a way to make it work. Best of luck to everyone!!!

@srk2017 I know and I have back ups but it is definitely my top choice.

I applied because they have the PA school. I want to stay in one place for more than 4 years. I have never been in a school for more than 4 years and I am excited to live my life at this college town. My parents are an hour and 1/2 away, perfect distance for me. Plus we have the Say Yes program

I applied because of its great premed, nice weather, beautiful campus, and friendly student body

my DS also applied due to their premed reputation. We are OOS, so not sure if we take it without merit.

I want to go to unc because of the great academics. I’ve also spent my childhood in and around the hospital system there and it inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field

Yeah I prob will only go to unc if I get the Robertson scholarship or full ride or other nice merit otherwise I’m going to Michigan for in state tuition
