I am an international student and was accepted into UNC-Chapel Hill. I am planning to major in Biology and was wondering how good the bio program is at UNC. Also, how would it compare to UVa, Rice and UT-Austin (I got into those too) ?
Thanks!!

i'm not sure about Rice and UT, but I think that UNC has a larger and stronger bio program than UVa. UNC is really good for pre-med, which is mostly bio. If I go there, i'll probably major in biology. Also, if you're a bio major at UNC, you get an automatic minor in chemistry as well, which is very useful.

i was a biology major first semester, but i changed it to psychology pretty much because I really like psych now and I hate chemistry. UNC has a very good science program, but it is pretty tough. I have a senior bio premed friend who said he's talked to medical students here that say some of our bio/chem classes are just as tough as medical school classes. We have some of the best professors teaching the courses here and our biology premed program is very well known and its very popular here.

also if your going premed it might be nice to know that at carolina we have an extra premed requirment that pretty much no other university requires. Because our analytical chemistry professor is one of the leading scientists in analytical chemistry, if you went to carolina for ur undergrad then the medical school will look to see if u have that credit.

Thanks amy24 and unccadet08!
It's really pretty difficult to get the lowdown on how good the Bio programs are at these universities. I'm not really planning on pre-med. Most likely I'll go in for biotech or genetics at the masters level.
I'm gonna have to choose between UVa and UNC, I think.
The problem with UVa is that the tuition is much higher- abt 31k i think.
UNC is abt 27k.
