Hey guys, I will be attending Chapel Hill this fall and am planning on a double major in biology and anthropology, and plan to minor in medical anthropology. I had a couple of questions, so I thought I'd post them here!

1) I scored enough on the AP Biology exam to get me credit for BIOL 101/101L. If I am going to major in biology, do I get to skip this or do I have to take it? I also scored enough on the AP Calculus BC exam to get credit for MATH 110P, 130P, 231, and 232? Or would I have to take this too?

2) How crazy is the competition? I've heard rumors, but would love to hear from someone who actually attends the school.

3) I want to take some classes over the summer. Will medical schools look down upon this?

4) How do medical schools feel about AP credit?

1) I skipped 101/101L and did OK, but not great in my subsequent biology classes at UNC. I think I had something like a 3.5-3.6 in my biology classes. You should be fine taking the credit on BC Calc. I did that too.

2) I didn’t think the competition was terribly crazy when I was taking my prereqs at UNC 3-4 years ago. (Holy crap, has it been that long?) I can tell you from experience, med school competition is much worse than anything I had at UNC.

3) Only if they’re prerequisite classes (Bio, Chem, Physics)…and even that’s debatable (varies across school to school)

4) My medical school was fine with me taking AP credit. YMMV.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! :)

I agree with phonyreal98. The only thing I would add is be prepared for upping your game when it comes to some of the sciences at UNC. They can be surprisingly challenging.

Welcome!

Right, to do well in science classes at UNC, you need to be prepared to do and understand ALL problem sets professors give you, even if they aren’t “required”. I found that if you can do all the problem sets and understand each step, you should set yourself up well to get an A in the class (maybe an A- at the lowest). It’s a lot of time, but certainly doable.

Thank you for the tips guys! I heard that especially in chem 101 and orgo, doing the homework is where a lot of people go wrong. since profs don’t check it, some people don’t feel like doing but the homework can significantly help you understand the test material later, if that makes sense. Is that true?

I placed out of both 101 and 102 and went right into analytical, but, yes that has been my experience in both orgos and subsequent chem classes.

Thank you, again!! :)
