An Australian student trying to claim that he got 2340 just cuz he made 99th percent on the national test. Top students leave for the US and the UK and don’t even take the national test, according to a friend at UChicago from Australia.

State is not like Chapel Hill at all, and State students will be the first to tell you that. State’s architecture is more “modern” (a lot of people say it is ugly, but I just think it is plain) and State’s student population is much more conservative and has a big population of what you might call “rednecks.” I’m not saying this as a dig at the school, I’m just letting you know what to expect. As far as campus life goes, NC State’s athletic programs haven’t done much in recent years, but there is hope on campus that its basketball team will be much better this year given their new recruiting class. Also, baseball games are big draws in the spring.

Absolutely. It is more of a “hipster” party crowd though.

Both schools are pretty unique.
Once again, repeating the stereotypes:

State: Rednecks. App: Hipsters/hippies.

Given this info, maybe you should take another look at UNC-Asheville. For some reason it strikes me as a place where a lot of people like you would congregate. Asheville isn’t a large city, but it is a beautiful one.

I have to agree with the comments above. If you never took the SAT, you can’t make a claim of a score that high.

I took the SAT, and scored a 2240. Considering it was not my national test I consider it alright. My department says that US international students coming in must have the SAT score or above that I cited…So stop acting like an arrogent bunch of americans who think you are just the greatest thing ever. Yes the US has some of the greatest universities in the world; but before you start boasting stop to think that you also have some of the worst. Great that your ‘out’ ivypbear, because really…youve ‘been so much help’! Yeah cause I have nothing better to make up fake posts ina forum in my spare time…you fool

Ashville? How is the student life there? Like what do students do on the weekends etc? If I plan to travel a lot is it easy from there? Academically, it does not really have a heap to offer me that my home institution cannot.

Also does anyone know anything about appalachians art history program? It looks really good! But I have heard their comm dep. isnt that great?

Kind of what I am leaning towards is NC state…I like the look of the campus and Raleigh. Academically it dosent seem shabby and seems to have a good student life.
But coming from a massive university myself, see that a smaller one would be waaayy easier to settle for one sem and would offer me a really different experience.

Does anyone know any good college websites where I can do some more research…stuff beyond the princeton review etc. I found a really good one called ratemycollege.com or something, but I cant find it again…

I am so confused. I have no idea what I want out of this experience and three schools with a totally different vibe to choose from.

p.s does asheville have good parties etc??

Oh also kind of important is that I will be going in Jan–May semester…and have been told that appalachian isnt that much fun because of its more outdoorsy feel…is asheville more fun in winter?

Coming from a UNC student, I would definitely pick State. I have many friends that go there, and I have never met anyone that didn’t like it. There is a healthy party scene and plenty of school spirit. Their sports program even seems to be on the rise again.
