UNC Transfer Fall 2020

Terms in residence counts as every block of 15 credit hours you have towards your degree. If you transfer in 60, it counts as 4 for example. But when I registered right after transferring, (though this was 2 years ago, we were accepted on April 7th but could register April 12th)I believe most transfers had the same date (one of the last ones before first-years). There is a decent portion of classes that have seats reserved for incoming transfers though.

After your first semester, your registration will be based on your terms in residence (blocks of 15 credit hours regardless of which institution they were taken at before transferring) @96kgNC

Pretty sure your terms in residence is related to your credits. If you’re transferring in as a Junior with 60 credits then you’d have 4 terms in residence (60/15 credits per semester) = 4 terms.

" For transfer students, the number of semesters (terms in residence) awarded as transferred is calculated based on the number of transfer credit hours awarded by UNC-CH and not the number of semesters in which you were enrolled at other colleges."

@Mcunn226 UNC online says you should enroll and register for classes ASAP, and also says housing is first come first serve. Do you know if it really matters to be registering right now and do you know if it was hard for transfers to get on campus housing when you got in?

@california203 - Yes. You should be doing these things ASAP. Registration has already begun (I registered for fall Tuesday morning and for summer a month ago). While upper level classes have some reserved spots for upper-level students or majors, not all do. Some classes have a wait list available but those also quickly fill up (if you’re #325 on for a 90 person seminar, there’s no point).

I’ve never done housing, but I imagine prime spots fill up before long.

Generally speaking, if something is first come, first serve, you want to be as close to first as possible. If you wait until May to sign up for classes then you most likely won’t get the class you want, when you want unless it’s a super specialized class. If you still need to take Gen Eds, sign up now.

It definitely helps if you register for classes as soon as you can as @Mcunn226 said, and that registration date will be on Connect Carolina. Many classes tend to fill up pretty quickly. I had some trouble with classes for my major being filled up when I registered so it put me a little behind, definitely make sure you register when you can.

I lived in Hardin (south campus suite dorms, mostly sophomores and some juniors) the year I transferred even though it wasn’t on my “housing priority” list when applying for housing but it was a good experience still. Of all the transfers who I knew that applied for on-campus housing, I don’t think any of them were rejected, the worst case is they were in a residence hall they didn’t really want. North campus is nice because of its proximity to classes, libraries, student stores and Lenoir dining hall, but they are all traditional dorm style (no suites). South campus dorms are mostly suites (some being a 4 room suite with 8 people sharing 1 bathroom, others being a Jack-and-Jill style suite with 2 rooms per bathroom). South campus is about a 10-15 minute walk to classes, though there are bus routes to shorten that. Mid-campus dorms might be a good option too because they are also quite close to classes and are suite style (Carmichael is right next the Student Recreation Center and is literally 4-5 minute walk to classes) @california203

@Mcunn226 @HSstudentNC thanks so much. Do you know anybody who was in the Transfer United LRP? It’s in Carmichael.

Are we able to make our Onyen without accepting yet?

I made my ONYEN but we can’t get into Sakai and register for classes without placing deposit

Any economics majors?

Is anyone else having trouble getting into Sakai? When I log in with my onyen it just says site unavailable. I have already payed my deposit.

I’m not going to accept until I know what my financial aid report is. Do you think I will be able to find housing once that is? I’m not sure how hard it is for transfers to find on-campus housing.

has anyone committed yet? i’d really like to, just nervous about how corona’s going to affect this upcoming semester

I am too. I paid my deposit pretty much immediately yesterday. I have set up my unc email but Sakai does not seem to be working

I talked to a current student that says Sakai seems to be very glitchy, so I will just keep trying it throughout the day and then call tomorrow if I don’t have any luck. Does anyone know the earliest we can register for classes? It says for us to ASAP on the checklist, but a current sophomore at UNC said she has not even been able to register yet.

Okay so UNC’s IT help site said that you will not be able to login to Sakai until after 12 noon of the next business day from when you create your ONYEN. So I think we will be able to log in tomorrow afternoon, and that’s why it says unavailable now.

CAS econ

I get admitted to the College of Letters& Science instead of the KFB-School; so I am an Econ major I guess

Anyone knows how to access to the registration web?

If you have made your ONYEN and are able to get into Connect Carolina, you should be able to see what your registration date is on the right side. I’ll also say this, Connect Carolina can be tedious at times. Randomly logging you out and then having to close the tab to get back in. A lot of redirects when you log in. Sometimes you think you’ve logged in successfully but it takes you to a page asking you to confirm your sign-out. Happens to me on Google Chrome and safari whether I have my user/password saved with auto fill or manually entering it in. Just a heads up. @unchopeful1999 Sakai isn’t really too important at the moment for a new transfer, it’s where your class info, resources and grades will be put in (for classes that don’t use another site for inputting grades). Connect Carolina is the most important thing to be focused on since it is where you’ll search for courses, enroll/drop/waitlist in courses, see important financial aid offers, transfer credit report to see which credits transfer etc. Sakai will become important close to when classes start. Most professors don’t upload their sakai page until a week or less before First day of class.

@Josephill If you have already made an ONYEN, you’ll be able to go into Connect Carolina to search for classes and see your registration date.
