UNC, UA, or Rhodes?

Hi! I'm trying to decide between UNC (oos), Alabama (oos), and Rhodes College in Memphis. I'm planning on majoring in business. These schools are all very different, making this decision very hard so I was wondering if I could get some more opinions.

I appreciate UNC's great reputation, the business program, and the school spirit. The campus and Chapel Hill are awesome too. It has felt a little impersonal to me though, which makes me a little concerned. Also, it is the most expensive since my parents will be paying full oos tuition.

I have a good scholarship to Rhodes, so it's affordable. I like the small class sizes and strong liberal arts education, but I'm a little worried about feeling claustrophobic there after four years. Even though the campus is beautiful, I'm not the biggest fan of gated campuses and feeling cut off from the rest of the community.

Right now, I feel the most attracted to UA. I'll be in the honors college, and I'm on the reserve list for the Computer Based Honors Program. It's the cheapest option with the Presidential Scholarship, and it feels like it has the best of a big school and a smaller community. I also am interested in the MIS major. I'm not sure about how challenging the academics are compared to UNC or Rhodes, though.

Sorry for the long post, but if anybody could offer any insight, I'd really appreciate it!

Hello! From what I hear, those are all great schools, but you’re right- they are all very different. I’m so glad that you are seriously considering Rhodes and that you have been offered a good scholarship. Our small class size is one of the things I love most about Rhodes and makes the learning experience much more personal and enjoyable. Most of my classes are based around close interaction with the professor or a round-table discussion that makes for awesome class discussions. Outside of class, our professors are available all the time for questions, advice, mentoring, etc. Just like our students choose Rhodes for the close interaction with our awesome faculty, the faculty choose to teach here to interact with us.

I haven’t felt claustrophobic here at all! Even though we have gates around our campus, we are VERY involved in the community. We have been voted #1 most service minded school in the country several years in a row, which attests to our love for the community and the various ways students get involved with it. Besides volunteer work, students are accepting internships at FedEx, ServiceMaster, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Memphis Zoo, one of our awesome cultural, art, or music museums. Also, the community and the city of Memphis is one of our biggest assets. Exploring Memphis and everything it has to offer makes for fun weekends and nights out on the town. Our campus is well known around the city and many doors open inside it for our students.

I just thought I’d take some time to respond to your concerns with Rhodes and try to ease your mind about them. Please let me know if you have any more questions about Rhodes or Memphis.

Thanks for replying! Memphis is one of my favorite parts of Rhodes because of the great food and amenities. And I do love the small classes and the opportunities to have relationships with professors that Rhodes offers.

Could you elaborate on your concerns regarding the impersonal feel at UNC? What do you want to do with a BSBA? MBA in your future? Looking for a job immediately after undergrad? What field are you interested in within business? How do you feel about Greek life? With 29 fraternities and 23 sororities, it is a HUGE part of the UA experience and social scene.

UNC has a better name than UA no matter how you fund it (after you graduate, nobody cares about what scholarship you got unless you were a Rhodes Scholar), but you will be just another number. UA will get you more attention, is cheaper, and the scholarship will make you feel special.

I’d say that if you are planning on doing business, UNC is probably your best bet as long as you can afford it. If you are planning on graduate school afterwards, Rhodes and UA are good options to save money. Are you leaning towards any particular one at this point?
