UNC v USC

Full ride to USC vs. paying out of state to UNC
major: journalism and business

any thoughts?

Would that be USC as in South Carolina or Southern California?

That’s exactly the question I was having. If South Carolina, indubitably UNC, if Southern California, I guess still UNC.
I really don’t know about Journalism major, but UNC’s J-School is very prestigious.
Speaking of something that I know, Kenan-Flagler is better than Marshall, except for Accounting, which is not provided by KFBS. One thing is, though, while you can receive four years of Business education at Marshall (given that you are admitted as Business major), you will have to apply separately at KFBS at Sophomore year and therefore you will only receive two years of business education.

USC as in Southern California. The thing is that I like UNC better, but is it really worth $20,000 more per year?

^^If you’re a journalism major it is. Seriously, we have probably the 2nd-ranked J-school in the nation (second to Northwestern; Syracuse also has a great program, but it’s focused more on broadcast). The Daily Tar Heel is an excellent student newspaper and wins national awards every single year.

I’ve had professors flat-out tell me that applicants who have UNC-Chapel Hill on their resumes for journalism jobs float to the top of the stack, because recruiters know how well prepared graduates are.

Also, I don’t know if this interests you, but there’s a business journalism certificate available through the JOMC School as well.

If you have any more questions about the journalism school feel free to ask here or PM me!

UNC has one of the top Jschool and Communications schools in the nation! if this is what you really want to do and are serious about it, UNC has the program. my brother graduated from UNC last year and it is amazingly beautiful and has everything a college-town could ask for. If you like LA (which not many people do) and can stand living there USC could be ok…but UNC is really the college life. Money is something you need to consider last–you can always takeout loans. Also being accepted to UNC out of state is AMAZING! it is one of the hardest universities to get into out of state (something like only 7% acceptance–harder than IVY) and esp their Journ school! USC is in the ghetto (i visited)…my parents really did not think it was safe. I visit UNC a few times a year and it’s one of my favorite places on earth!

I’m down to deciding between my final two schools. USC and UNC. USC gave me a great financial aid package, mainly a merit scholarship. UNC gave me nothing but a student loan. My parents have told me that they want me to make my decision without regard to finances. I like both schools pretty much equally, UNC gets a little bit of an edge because it is closer to home.
My parents said that for me to go to UNC they’re going to have to take out about 10k a year in loans and I’m also going to have to contribute more to my everyday expenses, which I don’t have problem with. But looking at the USC option where they won’t have to take out the loans, and I won’t have to pay as much, I can’t help but feel guilty about asking them to pay for me to go to UNC.
I’ve tried talkimg to them about it but they insist that they just want what is best for me. In my mind, this is not the time in their life when they should be taking out more loans, rather they should be saving for retirement.
Any advice?

swoopes–i saw your post on the UNC site too and we’re really in the exact same position. i was offered a full ride to USC (as stated above) and absolutely nothing to UNC. I don’t know if this will help you or not, but I’ve decided to go to UNC. Yes, it’s more expensive, but the campus is absolutely unbeatable and I can finish my double major of business and journalism in 4 years instead of 5. USC is kind of in the ghetto (as someone mentioned above) and you’re basically confined to the campus. I felt so claustrophobic there, and I don’t know about you, but I really just want the full college experience. If you’ve seen UNC, you know what I’m talking about when I say it is the FULL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. The surrounding area (Franklin Street, for starters) is an awesome place to hang out, there are incredible sports teams (meaning so much school spirit), and the overall feel of the school is just so much better than USC (in my own opinion). LA is an incredible, fun, vibrant city, but it’s the kind of place I’d like to visit, not to live. Plus, UNC is more prestigious, especially if you’re out of state, which I’m guessing you are. When it comes down to it, you just have to pick the school that you feel more comfortable at; otherwise, you’ll regret it and end up transferring. When i visited USC, i realized that i COULD be happy there. When I visited UNC, I realized that i WOULD be happy there, and that’s what really made the difference.
